Possibly one of the biggest misconceptions about overlanding is the idea that you need to save for years, buy your own vehicle, spent tons of time and money outfitting it and then take a year off before you can go out to explore. There are other alternatives and one of them is to buy a plane ticket to South Africa, rent a vehicle and go out explore on your own!

Fire: A Traveler’s Friend
I sit here, in the middle of absolutely nowhere, with only the moonlight and muscle memory to guide my fingers while I type, my thoughts fresh in my mind. Fire; it’s amazing and serves many purposes.
Snow Recovery Day
A couple of weeks ago I headed up to the Mormon Emigrant Trail in the Sierra Nevada to get into the snow and practice our recovery techniques. We were doing recoveries soon enough, however.
A Final Farewell to My Best Friend
We met online when I was in college, about 12 years ago. At the time I was looking for a partner to join me on winter snowboard trips.
A Short Detour Turns Long in Canon De Colca
We thought it would be easy.
Looking at the map we figured a quick two or three hour ride and we would be in Arequipa.

La Aduana: 1990 VW Golf Country 4×4
via West County Explorers Club: What happens when a 4×4 makes love to a Rabbit? You get the VW Golf Country 4×4. According to an older Bring a Trailer article, only 4000 of these were ever produced and none of them were officially imported to the US. This 1990 model, however, is reported to have…
VOTD: In Asia, Episode 4: Cambodia
In mid-December I wrote about Vincent Urban and Clemens Krüger’s on-going Vimeo series, In Asia, the first three parts of which had already been posted. The series documents the sites seen by the two filmmakers and a friend as they traveled on a two-month journey in a Land Rover Defender through Southeast Asia in the Fall of 2010. I’m happy to report that Part 4 has just been released. It covers mostly Cambodia.
Clink the vimeo link in the video for Vincent’s notes and descriptions. Enjoy.

VOTD: In Asia
Via West County Explorers Club: My friend Greg just sent me a link to this outstanding travel video by Munich-based freelance filmmaker, Vincent Urban and Clemens Krüger. Part 1 of a five-part series, it shows three friends traveling through southeast Asia in a Land Rover Defender 110. There is hardly any narration, hardly any dialogue. Moments of the trip are just strung together like memories. It’s beautifully shot and edited and gets to the heart of why we all travel.
The first three in the series are already on Vimeo. See Part 2 here and Part 3 here.
Thanks for the tip, Greg!

A Ghost Town Reborn: Silver City, ID
We hadn’t planned on going to Silver City. Heading to Boise up Hwy. 95, the easy way, was what we had in mind. But there we were in tiny, little Jordan Valley, Oregon, having lunch at a diner three miles from the Idaho border, when I spotted the above photo on the wall. I had…
