BMW: Still Time in 2022 to Ride & Improve Skills

BMW GS Trophy Team

BMW has a host of ideas help you improve skills, try out new bikes, and keep the adventure alive. Root for the USA at the upcoming GS Trophy competition or hit the road to a rally. Whatever you pick from their grab bag of options, motorcycles will be front and center.

BMW Motorrad GS Trophy 2022

Every two years, BMW holds their International GS Trophy event in a stellar location for adventuring, and for testing the skill, know-how, and endurance of adventure riders. In 2020, New Zealand, land of forests and fjords, hosted riders from around the world who qualified for their country’s team. As Heather Lea reported in 2021, this year teams from across the globe will convene in Albania, where the 7-day event begins on September 4. What BMW has set up for a course and special events remains to be seen.

Team U.S.A comprises Benjamin Phaup, Galina Snegireva, James Duplease, Kandi Spangler, and Cory Call. It won’t be long before they climb aboard their BMW R 1250 GS machines and spin their Metzeler Karoo 4 tires towards the daily challenges of Albania’s mountains, rivers, rock, and sand. Follow them on YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or use #SpiritOfGS.

Four Corners Rally and BMW Test Rides

Looking for something closer to home? Head for the Four Corners Motorcycle Rally in Ignacio, Colorado to rub elbows with fellow riders. Maybe take a demo ride on the 2022 BMW motorcycle of your choice. Stop by the Sky Ute Casino Resort, or just look for the big BMW Demo truck. Pre-registration for demo ride is required.

BMW Academy Improves Skills

Hone your skills at the BMW U.S Rider Academy in Spartanburg, South Carolina. On-track or off-road, male or female, with sand, slush, rocks or serpentine pavement under your wheels, there’s a training course that will make you a better, safer rider.

BMW Track Time at California Superbike School

If the need for speed is your driving force, California Superbike School is the place to strafe apexes aboard a BMW RS100RR. Experience over 190 horsepower on a closed course under the tutelage of experienced instructors. Improve skills by safely pushing a motorcycle to its limit with the slide bike, lean bike, and braking bike. California Superbike holds one- and two-day schools.

Get Dirty with RawHyde Adventures

BMW riders and others looking to tackle the toughest terrain will find expert help at RawHyde Adventures’ 2500 acre California training facility. It’s just one of their four locations that offer off-road riding training. RawHyde’s multi-level training program helps riders build their basic riding skills, improve on them, and master adventure techniques. Real-world training includes rides through the California desert or Colorado mountains. Joining one of their North or South American tours is a great way to improve those skills in new territory.

The takeaway: there are 4 months left of 2022, and BMW has some exciting ways to put that time to good use.

Arden’s first motorcycle was a Yamaha Enduro, obtained while in high school. It set the stage for decades of off-pavement exploration on dual-sports and adventure bikes. Camping in the middle of nowhere became his favorite pursuit. As a former whitewater river guide and National Park Service seasonal employee, Arden believes in wilderness, wildlife, and being kind to the earth. A self-taught writer who barely passed English classes, he has contributed adventure stories and tested motorcycles and accessories for Rider Magazine and other outlets for nearly 30 years. In that time, he’s worn out two KLR 650s and is currently following the road to the middle of nowhere on his Ténéré 700 and an aging but reliable DR-Z 400S.
