BMW International GS Trophy 2024

Trophy Time in Africa

BMW Motorrad returns the GS Trophy competition to its African roots for 2024, this time in rugged Namibia. It will be the 9th running of the biennial event, which was last held in Albania, as reported by Heather Lea. There will be 22 teams from across the planet, with a total of 60 riders competing for the win. Six of the teams will be women’s and 16 will be men’s.

The GS Trophy isn’t just about riding well. Teamwork is essential to come out on top with a regimen of riding, special skills, and navigation to conquer. And none of it will be easy.

From the Desert to the Sea

Namibia is a beautiful but unforgiving location for this event. Sandwiched between the Namib and Kalahari deserts, most of the diverse country is connected by gravel roads, perfect for BMW GS machines to make tracks. But there are are plenty of rough ones as well. And the GS Trophy 2024 route designers are sure to include the enormous dune system along Namibia’s west coast. Namibia’s hot, dry weather is certain to play a part as well.

Dr. Ralf Rodepeter, Head of Brand Management BMW Motorrad, put it this way: “Countless off-road kilometres with challenging route profiles passing through marvelous landscapes with fascinating flora and fauna once again ensure an exciting GS Trophy.”

What BMW’s Dr. Rodepeter didn’t mention about this GS Trophy was the wildlife the riders might encounter. Despite the dry climate, Namibia supports plenty of big game, such as elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and lions. There’s also a host of antelope-type grazing animals, from small dik-diks to avoid-at-all-costs gemsbok. And that flash of spots that just flew by? A cheetah looking for lunch.

Try for the Team

The company will hold BMW Motorrad Days from July 7 to 9, 2023 in Berlin. From July 6 to 8 they will hold international qualifying for the first time. This allows anyone to earn a spot on the International Team. National qualifying rounds are slated to begin soon. Follow it all here: GSTrophy.

Ride the Route

It’s not over till it’s over. BMW Motorrad has a special treat for those wanting to experience the ride: “Follow the Trails” tours. Right after GS Trophy 2024 finishes, BMW customers will be able to ride the same trails on the very bikes that were in the competition.

Arden’s first motorcycle was a Yamaha Enduro, obtained while in high school. It set the stage for decades of off-pavement exploration on dual-sports and adventure bikes. Camping in the middle of nowhere became his favorite pursuit. A self-taught writer who barely passed English classes, he has contributed adventure stories and tested motorcycles and accessories for Rider Magazine and other outlets for nearly 30 years.
