Staples In Tents’ The Gathering is Coming to Vancorum, Colorado, August 18-22

Sonya and Necota Staples of Staples In Tents and Black People Off-road are champions of equality in the outdoor space. They strive to make camping and overlanding accessible to everyone, including those from marginalized communities who haven’t traditionally enjoyed easy access to outdoor recreation opportunities. Enter The Gathering, a weekend of outdoor adventure and education in a safe and fun environment. This year’s summer Gathering will take place in Vancorum, Colorado, from August 18 to 22, 2022.

The Gathering focuses on community and education, with movie nights, a Saturday night bonfire, happy hours, contests, and raffles, as well as demos, films, and workshops. Exclusive programming such as mindfulness classes, live musical performances, and interactive workshops led by experienced facilitators round out the weekend schedule. In addition, participants can take advantage of 4WD opportunities located close to the venue.

A wide range of accommodation options will be on offer, including two-bedroom and studio cabins, Airstream trailers, glamping tents, and RV and tent camping spots. Camp V, the privately-owned event site, spans 120 acres and is located in the southwest desert of Colorado.

“As avid travelers, adventurers, educators, and sightseers, we strive to provide a safe, fun space to incorporate outdoor activities into your healthy lifestyle while challenging the negative stereotypes that people of color don’t dwell and thrive in these spaces,” said the Staples. “We want you to see you in these spaces, so you can reap the physical and mental benefits of outdoor adventuring.”

Increased access to this event is provided through scholarships offered by HBCU Outside and the Greening Youth Foundation. To learn more about The Gathering 2022 in Colorado, visit staplesintents.com/the-gathering-2022-colorado.

Ashley Giordano completed a 48,800-kilometer overland journey from Canada to Argentina with her husband, Richard, in their well-loved but antiquated Toyota pickup. On the zig-zag route south, she hiked craggy peaks in the Andes, discovered diverse cultures in 15 different countries, and filled her tummy with spicy ceviche, Baja fish tacos, and Argentinian Malbec. As Senior Editor at Overland Journal, you can usually find Ashley buried in a pile of travel books, poring over maps, or writing about the unsung women of overlanding history. @desktoglory_ash
