AWD Vehicles Face National Park Service Fines on 4WD Trails

Overland news

The National Park Service (NPS) may begin broadly citing drivers of all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles who venture onto trails designated exclusively for four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles. This concern stems from a recent incident where a Subaru Crosstrek driver was warned for driving on the 4WD-only Colorado River Overlook Road in Canyonlands National Park. The NPS emphasizes that AWD systems, while capable on slippery roads, lack the off-road capabilities of 4WD vehicles, which are necessary for such challenging terrains. Violators could face fines of up to $5,000. (You can look forward to a dedicated AWD versus 4WD functionality article here on Expedition Portal in the coming weeks).
