We’ve featured several well-equipped Ram 2500s recently including this $175,000 2022 Big Horn with Four Wheel Campers Hawk, a $105,000 2020 Laramie Off-Road Edition with Four Wheel Campers Raven, and a $129,000 2022 Ram 2500 with CampX Overland Camper. These rigs are awesome, but at over $100,000 they’re cost-prohibitive for many of us. Alternatively, today’s 2006 Ram 2500 showcases a well-equipped custom camper and tasteful modifications, and is priced at just $30,000. It features the bulletproof 5.9-liter Cummins diesel, which is both powerful and surprisingly frugal. Hence, you enjoy a considerable 12,500-pound towing capacity and a 3,700-pound payload, yet can expect upwards of 20 mpg on the highway. These are just some of the reasons that overlanders are transitioning in flocks from mid-size to full-size trucks as discussed in Scott Brady’s Expedition Portal article, Full-size Revolution and on the Overland Journal Podcast. The sum of $30,000 is no small amount of money for a vehicle, but it’s not much for a four-season rolling home, especially when you consider that you could live and travel in this for a few years and sell it for almost what you paid (not to mention what you’ll save on rent and bills). From the Seller:
“This has been an amazing truck for me for many years. I have put a lot of work (and money) into keeping it in good shape, and it’s been an incredibly reliable vehicle. I’ve driven it all over the country, to Mexico twice, and wouldn’t hesitate to drive there with it again tomorrow. I had the A/C serviced last year so it stays icy cold in the summer. Overall, this has been an incredible project and is a burly truck/camper combo.[It] is the ultimate truck (best engine ever?) with a very unique, usable camper in a somewhat lightweight package.”
2006 Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel
The 2500 is fitted with a 5.9-liter Cummins turbo-diesel that produces 325 horsepower, 610 pound-feet of torque, and returns 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway (although some owners claim 24 mpg on the highway). A torquey, yet relatively economical, engine is matched with good all-terrain capability thanks to 4WD and low range. Inside driver comforts include air-conditioning, power steering and windows, cup holders, cruise control, and more.
