The cost of Land Cruisers has skyrocketed in recent years, with the point of entry becoming increasingly out of reach for many of us. However, fear not because there are 4WDs on the market offering many of the same benefits as the Land Cruiser but at a fraction of the price. One such example is the venerable Mitsubishi Montero, which provides much of the same fabled Japanese reliability and build quality but can be yours for under $10,000. Consequently, it’s a popular choice on our forum with recent adventure-ready examples, including this 1998, a 2000, and a 1999. Key benefits include comfortable seating for five with a generous rear load bay, a dependable V6 motor, a rear limited-slip differential, manual locking hubs, and more. Hence, it’s a great option for overlanding with stunning builds from Weekend Overlanders and Functionally Obsolete. If you’d like a better idea of how this vintage rig handles backcountry adventures, check out the videos from North Offroaders and SUV Battle. Today’s 1993 LWB offering has covered 255,101 miles and has recently undergone a mechanical overhaul.
From the Seller:
“Monteros always have a special place in my heart. Cheaper than a Toyota 4Runner and with a drivetrain just as beefy. The Montero platform is probably one of the most underrated 4WDs you can own. This is the 3rd Montero I have owned, and I always loved the look and utility of the 4-door Gen 1s. One of my favorite features is the bouncy suspension driver’s seat. It makes even the roughest roads feel comfortable for the driver. My plan was to make this into a dedicated off-road truck, but I have since decided to move in another direction. This is probably my first used car where I have this many service records passed down, and it even includes a DVD with photos of the engine rebuild.”
