Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender is an overlanding icon ideally suited to off-grid travel, but due to their rarity, they cost a premium, with recent offerings including a $58,000 1993 110, a $71,000 1998 90, and a $113,000 CAD 2012 130. However, there are still deals to be had, and to this end, cue today’s 1994 Land Rover Defender 110 Wagon (odometer states 2,400 kilometers, but seller notes this is incorrect). At $39,000, this exceptionally clean and well-maintained example represents an impressive value and would serve as the ideal blank canvas for a full overland buildout. The Defender is widely considered a pinnacle overland platform and has long been the 4WD of choice for our 4WD Senior Editor Graeme Bell. It’s a vehicle that, from the factory, was designed to endure daily punishment and in all regards is engineered for durability, capability, and field serviceability. If you’d like to learn more about the desirable attributes of this iconic 4WD for exploration, then listen to The Classic Defender for Overlanding Travel.

From the Seller:

I picked this truck up last fall, thinking I would replace my 110 HiCap pickup and build a mild wheeling rig. But once I pulled them both out of storage, I’ve decided to hang onto the pickup and find a new home for this one. This is a great driving Defender. The air-conditioning kit that’s installed is $6,000 from Rovers North (I also have a receipt for the $1,500 install), and the tires are close to $1,500 mounted. The truck is currently located at Matt Browne’s shop in southern Maine near the New Hampshire border. He would be an unbiased and honest judge to speak with about it.”

The Defender is fitted with a 2.5-liter turbo-diesel that, in stock form, produces 107 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque. A relatively economical motor is matched with legendary capability thanks to 4WD, high and low range, armor, and a locking center differential. Inside, the Land Rover is intentionally utilitarian but does incorporate the following driver comforts:

  • Cool Air Logan air-conditioning
  • Center console with cupholders
  • Power steering
  • Phone mount
