Today’s offering is quite simply a 4WD icon. The Land Rover Defender is, in many regards, the definitive overland vehicle, and just saying the name evokes a sense of wanderlust. Since Land Rover unveiled the Series I at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948, it has gone on to achieve numerous automotive world firsts and produced some of the best 4WDs ever made. In fact, it’s estimated that for more than half of the world’s population, the first car they ever saw was a Land Rover. The Defender is undoubtedly the company’s magnum opus and was engineered from the factory with commercial utility, military application, and remote exploration in mind. It’s for these reasons and more that it has long been the platform of choice for our Senior 4WD Editor Graeme Bell. The Bell family (A2A Expedition) has traveled to some of the world’s most remote and inhospitable regions in their Land Rover Defender 130. From the factory, the Defender is undoubtedly a pinnacle platform, but it’s arguably the community and aftermarket support that makes this vehicle so exceptional. Wherever you are in the world, you can bet that there’s a Land Rover garage or enthusiast online or on hand to offer assistance, and whatever the issue, there’s an OEM or aftermarket solution to fix it. Cue today’s 1993 Land Rover Defender 110 (24,700 miles), which boasts a plethora of desirable modifications and could be enjoyed as is or would serve as the ideal blank canvas for a full overland buildout. This stunning enthusiast-owned example wants for nothing and has recently undergone a huge list of maintenance and servicing (see original listing for full details). If you’re looking to explore the road less traveled this summer, then this would be a great option. From the Seller:
“I grew up in the back of a 1973 Land Rover Series 88. Sat in the back jump seats, at 5 years old, doing my best to help Dad out with the work—chainsaws, an axe, and ropes sliding and bouncing around me. The smell of exhaust, mixed with bar and chain lube, is deeply ingrained in my memory. I grew to be quite tall and didn’t quite fit in a Series any longer, so the Defender became the natural successor to raise our children in and to adventure in. The children grew up in and around the Defender: Vermont, the Canadian border, hiking, camping, mountain biking, canoeing, dogs, overland gatherings, all [implanted] deep in their being. At 12 and 14, they, too, have grown to be quite tall, so the family no longer fits in our 110. We love this truck and everything it stands for. We are certain that the next owner will understand, as did all the owners that have come before, how special Rovers are.”
