Land Rover Discovery I

The Land Rover Discovery is a popular choice for overlanding on our forum with recent examples including this 1997, 1999, and 2004. Generally speaking, the Discovery is an affordable alternative to the Defender despite offering many of the same 4WD credentials and a more luxurious interior. Cue today’s 1998 Land Rover Discovery I, which showcases extensive aftermarket upgrades, a full interior build-out, and is topped with a Quickpitch rooftop tent. At $28,000, this is a premium example but still less than half the price of this largely stock same-year Land Rover Defender. The Discovery cut its teeth in the infamous Camel Trophy events and remains a great choice for backcountry travel thanks to aftermarket support. If you’d like a better idea of how this platform can be outfitted for adventure, check out builds from Overland NZ, Overland N Explore, and Nine Eleven South. It’s also featured as a project vehicle in our Building a Pinnacle Vehicle series and later featured in a Land Rover Discovery Shoot-out on the Expedition Portal YouTube channel.

Land Rover Discovery I

From the Seller:

I built this as a go-anywhere (it’s never been stuck; with the triple lockers, it motors right along), self-sufficient (full pull-out kitchen with refrigerator, stove, and portable water, etc.), off-road capable rig to have some fun with in the Ozarks and to go places my big van wouldn’t or shouldn’t be. It’s been a great rig and has taken me on many adventures. I enjoy the build process almost as much as the journeys these rigs take us, with that said, the only reason I’m selling this is to make room and funds for the next unit. I would hop in this and drive it anywhere right now. Ready to explore.
