Is the new Starlink satellite internet from SpaceX the mobile broadband data solution that travelers have been looking for? Well, if we’re being honest, not quite yet. We previously featured the Starlink in our Overland News of the Week column and one astute reader was quick to point out the lack of support for users who want to take Starlink on the road. This is the current limitation of the system, it must be tied to a physical address.
However, it sounds like this will be changing in 2021. In recent weeks, Musk responded to a Twitter follower who asked about the prospects of using the Starlink service with an RV or tiny home. “Yeah, should be fully mobile later this year,” said Musk, “so you can move it anywhere or use it on an RV or truck in motion. We need a few more satellite launches to achieve complete coverage and some key software upgrades.”
While I wait for the much-anticipated software updates and additional satellites needed to begin using my Starlink while traveling, Scott has already begun putting the system to use at Overland Journal and Expedition Portal HQ in Arizona.
