Turkana Gear Storage Solutions :: Field Tested

Some products are innovative originals, and others are mere copies, no matter how well made. What sets Turkana’s products apart from the rest is that they are built by the salt of the earth—long-distance, intercontinental, two-wheeled adventurers—for the rest of us mere mortals. Handmade in South Africa by the finest craftsmen from the finest materials, Turkana Gear specializes in durable, practical equipment for overlanders and motorcycle travelers. Designed with real-world experience and rigorous on-road testing, the product lineup offers solutions for travelers seeking reliability in the harshest environments. From soft luggage systems and camping essentials to versatile accessories, Turkana focuses on functionality, simplicity, and affordability—making them a trusted companion for off-road exploration. In addition to the sassy names, each bag below has an individual exterior product label, with two interior labels, one with the quirky message, “Do not handle with care,” and the other lists the name of the stitcher along with the production number for quality control. It’s all in the details.

Sloth Multi-Purpose Utility Bag

The Sloth Multi-Purpose Utility Bag is a modular storage solution that adapts to your needs. Whether you’re utilizing it as a first aid kit, cooking gear, tool bag, or toiletries (as we do), this bag is versatile and practical. The Sloth hangs around until it’s needed and is ideal for any adventurer looking for a durable, robust, and easy-to-clean utility bag. Two carry handles and two tagged zips provide easy access. A stainless steel hook is included for securing the bag to a wall hook or over a door—when wall hooks are scarce, like at a campground or public showers. With a weight capacity of up to 25 kilograms, it is tough enough for all your essentials. The bottom section holds two zippered pouches to store items like soap, dental floss, or anything that needs to stay dry. The top section includes an elasticated mesh pouch with two enclosed, removable pouches. We love the two Velcro zippered pouches, making it easier for Graeme to carry his own pouch to the bathroom while I continue to use the utility bag, complete with the removable mirror. For hikers or backpackers, the Sloth works equally well as a multi-purpose bag for toiletries and kitchen utensils.

Magpie Every Day Carry Utility Bag

I was genuinely surprised by the Magpie. It may look like an appealing but unsuspecting utility bag, but this bag punches above its weight, successfully replacing both our sling pack and wallet by combining those contents into one compact and reliable option. Made from Sharkfur 600-denier polyester ripstop, it’s nearly indestructible whether you are camping, overlanding, or hiking. The bag features two carry handles and webbing on the back, allowing you to strap it down to any surface. Inside, two padded walls and Velcro-strapped pouches make it perfect for storing technology or sensitive items. There are two removable dividers to allow you to stow items with you or make space for others. The first divider has two meshed zipped enclosures for small change or smaller items such as SD cards and elasticated MOLLE panels for storing cables or stationery. The second divider has a large meshed zipped pocket, ideal for your passport or notes, and has 10 smaller elastic loops on the reverse side. With a capacity of 1.6 liters, the Magpie is multifunctional and can serve as a first aid kit, camera bag, or tech organizer.

Chipcheeks Utility Bag by Turkana Gear

I have always loved packing cubes, especially when they are made with quality materials. The Chipcheeks is the perfect solution for storing any items that tend to clutter up our camper. The utility bag is water-resistant, made with Sharkfur 600-denier polyester ripstop, and designed for durability and ease of organization. It has a sturdy zipper with pull tabs and carry handles on three sides, making it easy to strap down or carry. The Chipcheeks is compact yet spacious and is ideal for those looking to store tools, hiking gear, or personal items. We loved the fact that they come in modern colors and are available in 1- or 3-liter sizes.
