The Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association (MDHCA) is holding its annual Mojave Road Rendezvous. It is set to be a cracker of an event this year, bigger than ever before and with more to offer all desert lovers. The event features a lineup of world-class speakers, corporate-sponsored workshops, a huge offering of historical presentations, “Lost Arts” demonstrations like blacksmithing and 1800s stamp mill demonstrations, and a host of educational field trips to key historical locations. In addition to the lineup of activities, there will be door prizes, a raffle, and an awards ceremony.
With camping available on-site and a schedule brimming with activities to educate and entertain all, attendees are assured of a unique event.
The event, which will run from 6-9 October 2022 and will feature a Pot Luck dinner on Friday night, BBQ’d Tri-Tip on Saturday night, and Dutch Oven deserts. This year’s event will also bring back a traditional happening, the Town Hall Event, where board members will provide updates on recent developments, and members will be asked to provide their feedback and ask questions in an open dialogue.
The featured Key Note Speaker for the event is Chris Collard, a member of the Off-road Hall of Fame as a pioneering journalist, a world-class photojournalist, former Editor in Chief of Overland Journal and a globally experienced adventurer. Chris is the living example of how you can change your stars if you want it bad enough.
The Educational Field Trips being offered at this year’s event are:
The General George S Patton Desert Training Center sites, a Private Tour of Cadiz Ranch, a tour through the Piute Mountains, Archaeology of the Mojave National Preserve, Eagle Pass, and Red Cave Rocks, the Sagamore and Keystone Mines, and a tour out to Riley’s Camp.
Two other first-time offerings at this year’s event are an archery demonstration by a world-class master archer and a silent film with a live piano accompaniment in the historic Schoolhouse Museum.
Usually veiled in secrecy, a presentation will be offered by a historian and Ph.D. candidate regarding the contents of the MDHCA archive and collection titled “What’s in There, Anyway?” Historical Research and Archival Success at Goffs.
There will also be authors Joe DeKehoe, John & Barbara Marnell, and Jere Baker on-site for Meet and Greet and book signings. Workshops will include a discussion of the unique desert environment and a review of historical artifacts discovered in the Mojave Desert and presented at the MDHCA.
In addition to all of the above, there will also be overlanding/exploration skills-building workshops regarding Desert Exploration Essentials presented by MDHCA President Billy Creech and an off-road navigation presentation by onX’s Chris Cordes. Billy will teach the skills to help you get lost, and Chris will teach the skills to help you be found!
