SYA Off Road Extension Kit for LR3, LR4, and Range Rover Sport

Land Rovers catch a lot of flak for maintenance and reliability. Problems like shoddy electronics, leaking (or spewing) coolant, and seeping oil are all taunting points of Toyota owners, but there is one Land Rover feature that despite its flaws has earned our love, the air-suspension.

It’s for good reason we like them though, these wonderful pieces of technology give owners a smooth ride, adjustable clearance for technical terrain, a lower height for parking garages, and of course a neat party trick to impress their friends. They also make lifting your vehicle a breeze. Snap in a Johnson rod kit and you instantly have more lift on the trail and room for larger tires.Unfortunately, this doesn’t come without a cost.

Because these lifts function by inflating the air struts to a greater height, you also increase air pressure which reduces service life and encourages failures. The ride quality deteriorates, and lifting your formerly cushy air suspension begins to look like a less than stellar plan.

Of course you can now fit bigger tires which makes it all worth it… right? Like many things Land Rover, it’s all fine until it isn’t. Because the vehicles were never meant to accommodate such large tires, a blown suspension wont leave your car on the bump stops, but slumped on the tires unable to move. Not a huge deal on pavement, but life threatening in the back country.

For this reason we were excited to finally see someone addressing the issue. Lucky 8 and Proud Rhino have teamed up to make a bump stop spacer kit that will not only make your trips more enjoyable, but safer as well. Their new product allows the lift rods to do their job and raise the vehicle, but lessens the extent to which the struts need to inflate. This means a lower air pressure inside which reduces the risk of leaks, creates a smoother ride, and lengthens the overall service life compared to a traditional air strut lift. Most importantly however, the raised bump stops provide enough clearance in the event of a failure for you to drive out safely.

While we’re big fans of anything that will make your vehicle more capable and comfortable, something that increases safety as well makes it a home run. As Land Rover owners we understand what its like to trek into the back country with that buried fear of a breakdown. The peace of mind knowing that even if the worst were to happen we can still make it home, is worth every cent of the price. And believe us, it is sure a heck of a lot cheaper than a tow off the trail.
