A brand new, high-quality wedge rooftop tent and 270-degree awning for less than $3,500? Impossible!
On a recent tour across the width and breadth of the USA, we equipped a Range Rover Classic with a Wedge rooftop tent and a 270 awning, transforming the vehicle instantly into an overlander. In an age when recreational vehicle prices have hit the stratosphere, it is important to remember that you simply do not need a top-of-the-range vehicle to get out there and explore; overland travel is about the journey, not just the vehicle. A relatively small investment can provide you with the comfort and security to get out there and explore.
The Baja Wedge rooftop tent possesses a few key features that sets it apart, including optional heater/AC ports and a sealable air vent to prevent precious warm air from escaping in winter. Importantly, the windows and door roll up (not down); you do not have to step on the door/window when entering or exiting the tent, preventing damage. The rainfly is removable, which makes a lot of sense if you regularly camp in areas that experience high winds. There are few things worse while camping than being kept awake all night by a rainfly flapping against the canvas beside your head. Been there, done that—no thanks. A mattress and anti-condensation mat come standard, and bedding can be easily stored inside the tent when closed. Not only is the Baja Wedge well-equipped and priced, the load bars are also included at no additional cost, which represents a significant saving (for example, a set of Front Runner load bars can cost north of $300). In addition, Overland Pros now offer Sunflare solar panels, which can be mounted atop the wedge tent in either a 126-watt or 252-watt configuration; the panels are durable and carry a 25-year warranty.
The Wraptor 4K 270 Awning is constructed of waterproof 280G ripstop canvas. It quickly expands to give you 270 degrees of shade around your vehicle and includes height-adjustable support poles that extend to 8 feet, 6 inches, used when deploying the awning walls during high winds. The company claims that the awning can be deployed by one person in less than a minute. The Wraptor 4K measures 2.2 meters (86 inches) long when stowed on the vehicle.
During our Range Rover experience, we found that carrying fabric walls to attach to an awning can create a large and private external living area for outdoor sleeping, cooking, washing, and general camp life. Overland Pros stocks wall sets that are made from lightweight waterproof 200D polyester and are available to purchase separately. The awning walls attach with velcro, as opposed to zips, and are interchangeable between the 4K and 6K awning, which allows you to move walls depending on the sun’s position. Yes, there are two awnings in the K series; the 4K offers approximately 80 square feet of coverage, while the 6K has an extra “wing” that extends toward the front of the vehicle and offers an astounding 130 square feet of coverage.
Both awnings ship free to the Lower 48. Overland Pros is based near Sacramento, California.
