Hunter RMV Launches the Sherpa XLE 6×6

For some of us, the idea of an ex-military 6×6 equipped with a spacious and comfortable abode is just about perfection. It is astounding what six tires working together can achieve in an off-road environment. The Sherpa XLE is built on the robust M1089 A1 Stewart and Stevenson 6×6 chassis. This vehicle blends rugged performance with modern comforts to cater to the most demanding overland enthusiasts.

The Sherpa XLE’s underpinnings boast impressive specifications. Its power comes from a CAT 3126B 6-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, delivering 330 horsepower and 860 pound-feet of peak torque. This powerhouse pairs with an Allison seven-speed automatic transmission, ensuring smooth handling across diverse terrains. The six-wheel drive system includes a crawler gear for navigating challenging off-road conditions. With an empty weight of 27,100 pounds and a fully equipped weight of 28,900 pounds, the Sherpa XLE maintains a maximum gross vehicle weight rating of 33,000 pounds. Its 800-mile range underscores its capability for extended journeys far from refueling stations, with a severely abused credit card (Google M1089 A1 Stewart and Stevenson 6×6 MPG for a heart attack).

The Sherpa XLE’s rugged exterior conceals an interior that prioritizes comfort and convenience. The living area is designed to feel more like a home than an expedition vehicle, featuring high-quality finishes and thoughtful amenities. As with most of Hunter RMV’s builds, this vehicle incorporates numerous custom upgrades, and the buyer gets to decide what they need and what they can afford.

The 22-foot habitat box is constructed from 2.25-inch composite panels and includes 18 feet of living space along with a four-foot-wide garage area. The garage features a lift and storage for a dual-sport motorcycle and two mountain bikes. Interior features include diffused and direct LED lighting throughout, a pass-through from the habitat to the cab (a highly desirable feature for international travel), a surround camera system, a TV and audio system, and Starlink mobile connectivity. The sleeping area boasts an electric queen lift bed situated over a large leather dinette, with multiple windows fitted with screens and shades, roof fans, and a large roof hatch.

The kitchen is fully equipped with white laminate cabinets, two refrigerators, an induction cooktop, an air fryer, a microwave, and a stainless-steel sink. The dry bathroom includes a washer-dryer, a separate toilet, and a large shower room. Climate control and utility systems include a Dometic 12-volt air conditioning unit, Truma diesel heat and hot water, 120 gallons of fresh water capacity, a 35-gallon gray water tank with a dump valve, and an outside shower.

The vehicle has a central tire inflation system (CTIS) to enhance off-road performance and versatility. It features upgraded high-speed gearing for improved drivability, sound, and heat deadening for a quieter, more comfortable cabin. The cabin interior includes premium Scheel-Mann Vario XL seating and air-conditioning for added comfort. Navigation and communication are supported by a Garmin Overlander and Bearcat CB radios, while tinted glass enhances privacy and reduces glare.

A remote entry system adds convenience, multiple under-box compartments provide additional storage, and a spare tire area is equipped with a winch for easy access. The vehicle includes a Traeger smoker and barbecue with flattop grills for outdoor cooking, perfect for enjoying meals on the go.

Its energy systems include a Victron Energy setup with 800 amp-hour lithium batteries and 1,000 watts of solar panels mounted on the roof, ensuring sustainability and off-grid capabilities.

Keith Storey, founder of Hunter RMV, described the Sherpa XLE as a culmination of the company’s dedication to delivering both performance and value.

“The Sherpa XLE is the epitome of rugged capability, reliability, and modern comfort. It also adds the element of affordability, making this a very desirable rig indeed.”

This custom-made Sherpa XLE retails in the region of $250,000, with all the bells and whistles, a competitive price point compared to what similarly specced vehicles sell for. This is a half million dollar vehicle, at half the price, with all of the features.
