Electric vehicles are redefining the overland space and demonstrating that on-road performance, backcountry capability, range, and sustainability can coexist in harmony. EVs are not without their caveats, but to dismiss them for overlanding is short-sighted. Take today’s 2022 Rivian R1T Quad Motor Launch Edition (19,630 miles), which from the factory outperforms many of the pinnacle internal combustion overland platforms we know and love. Power is practically unmatched with a mind-boggling 835 horsepower and 908 pound-feet, which is significantly more than even Ram’s flagship $100,000 702 horsepower 1500 TRX. It can safely ford 914 millimeters (3 feet) of water, which barely beats the latest Land Rover Defender’s 900 millimeters. It can provide up to 14.4 inches of ground clearance, outperforming the 300-Series Land Cruiser’s 9.25 inches. It showcases a max climb gradient of 45 degrees, which is on par with other legendary 4WDs such as the Jeep Wrangler and Nissan Patrol. What about range? I hear you scream. Well, it has an EPA range of 314 miles, almost identical to both of my rolling homes, a 1986 Vanagon Syncro and 1992 Mitsubishi Delica L300. All this is to say that the Rivian is one of the best EVs for overlanding and a fantastic overland rig, period. Still not convinced? We have extensively field tested this platform and documented our experiences (spoiler, they’re very positive) on Expedition Portal, on the Overland Journal Podcast, and on YouTube. Today’s offering showcases the exclusive Launch Green exterior and is sold with the remainder of the factory 5 year/60,000 mile warranty and 8 year/175,000 mile powertrain warranty.
From the Seller:
“Getting out into the wild is about escaping the chaos and noise of daily life and enjoying everything that unspoiled nature provides. I could think of nothing better than the Rivian to be the basis for the perfect overlanding vehicle. It’s not just amazingly capable and nimble—being about the same size as the ubiquitously venerable Toyota Tacoma—but being purely electric, it leaves less of a mark on the environment and allows you to enjoy the sounds of nature. My goal was to have a daily driver that was comfortable and easy to live with, while also being extremely capable of reaching the most off-grid locations. The Rivian delivers all of that out of the box. The amount of storage in the Rivian allows almost unlimited provisioning for gear and supplies. Having a giant battery powering the vehicle not only means less noise and other possible contamination from gas or oil, but it allows a powered fridge/freezer, induction burner, and all other gadgets to be powered without a generator. I truly love this vehicle and if it wasn’t for the growing family taking to the road full time, I couldn’t think of a better way to enjoy the world as it is.”
2022 Rivian R1T Quad Motor
The R1T’s quad-motor drivetrain produces an almighty 835 horsepower and 908 pound-feet of torque. Subsequently, on-road performance is more akin to a hypercar than a truck with a 0 to 60 mph sprint of just 3 seconds. However, it’s when the tarmac ends that the Rivian truly excels, thanks to a sophisticated 4WD system (a motor on each wheel provides precise torque vectoring), an adjustable air suspension that can provide up to 14.9 inches of clearance, up to 3 feet water fording, skid plates, adjustable off-road modes (including Rock Crawl, Rally, Mud, Sand, and Snow), Hill Descent Control, multiple recovery points, Trail Control, and a 360-degree camera system. Inside, these backcountry attributes are balanced with a luxurious interior with driver comforts that include:
