This Nissan Frontier Pro-4x has not been adopted to anywhere near the same extent for overlanding as its Toyota, Jeep, or Ford counterparts, despite showcasing many of the same desirable attributes. Nevertheless, we’ve featured a number of adventure-equipped offerings including this 2002, 2013, and 2019 Pro-4x. It also featured in our Midsize Truck of the Year with Publisher Scott Brady stating: “The Frontier is the most reliable truck sold in North America, both for initial quality and for 36-month dependability (J.D Power),” continuing, “it’s both comfortable and competent on the trail and feels well-suited to the task.” It’s also a favorite with the Overland International team and was subsequently chosen as an Expedition Portal Build. At $14,500, today’s 2011 Nissan Frontier (126,000) represents an impressive value, especially considering it showcases the Pro-4x package (details below) and is fitted with an ARE topper. In stock form, the Pro-4x variant is already impressive when the tarmac ends, but thanks to aftermarket support, it can be extensively uprated for overland travel as demonstrated by builds from Destination Frontier, Part Time Dirtbag, and Backcountry Beefcakes.
From the Seller:
“This Nissan Frontier works great and was used as my daily driver until I got a new truck. We also used it for dispersed camping as it has a bed platform built in back with sliding drawers. In the last 5,000 miles, it had new tires, brake pads, rotors, shocks, springs, leafs, a cabin air filter, engine air filter, spark plugs, front and rear differential fluid, and transmission fluid.”
2011 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x
The Frontier is fitted with a 4.0-liter engine that produces 261 horsepower, 281 pound-feet of torque, and returns a combined 17 mpg. A dependable V6 is matched with excellent go-anywhere performance thanks to 4WD, Bilstein shocks, high and low range, a locking rear differential, and skid plates. Inside, today’s Pro-4X is well-equipped with driver comforts that include:
- Air-conditioning
- Cruise control
- Power steering, windows, doors, and mirrors
- Center console with cupholders
- Stereo with MP3 connectivity
Distinguishing Features
Today’s Nissan Frontier is largely unmodified, which makes it the perfect blank canvas for a full overland build-out.
