Land Rover Discovery II

The Discovery II is a popular choice for overland builds with recent offerings including this 1999, 2001, and 2004. Traditionally, the older Discos have been something of an underappreciated value, but with the price of Defenders skyrocketing, we’re seeing a growing number of overlanders opting for the Discovery. What’s interesting is this vehicle is not just the “cheap alternative” but a legitimate overland vehicle that not only goes toe-to-toe with the Defender but, in some regards, betters it. It carries forward the rugged backcountry credentials and utility of the latter but introduces elevated refinement. Further still, when you consider the price difference between a pre-owned Discovery II and a same-year Defender, you’re left with enough money to fully outfit the former and travel around the world. That may seem like a bold statement, but often Defenders are 15 times the price (for example, this $6,400 2001 Discovery II versus a $99,000 1999 Defender 110). Today’s 2001 Land Rover Discovery II is one of the more expensive examples we’ve featured, but that’s because it’s been extensively modified. From the Seller:

This 2001 Land Rover Discovery II SE was acquired in March 2020 and subsequently modified with a 5.3-liter Vortec L33 V8, Detroit Truetrac limited-slip differentials, and a lifted suspension with Fox shock absorbers and Old Man Emu coil springs. The truck is finished in Chawton white over beige leather upholstery and features dual-zone automatic climate control and heated front seats as well as a four-speed automatic transmission. Services performed under current ownership involved replacing the transfer case input shaft bearing and seal as well as the driveshafts, wheel hubs, and various brake components. This modified Discovery II is now offered on dealer consignment with a Carfax report and a clean Pennsylvania title.”
