BDR Special Edition Ducati Desert X Up For Grabs

Win an adventure-ready Ducati DesertX while supporting Backcountry Discovery Routes. This “Cross Continent Special Edition” has been tricked-out by over a dozen accessory companies. Wolfman Motorcycle Luggage, Scotts steering dampers, and Black Dog Cycle Works have all contributed their specialized adventure products to this one-of-a-kind motorcycle.

NorCal BDR Beckons

This year’s drawing celebrates the upcoming completion of the Northern California BDR, known as CABDR-North, scheduled for next February. Once the snow is out of the way the ride should be amazing. Northern California has rivers, forests, plains, and plenty of history to keep a rider interested. And like any BDR, there will be challenging sections, fun two-tracks, and some gravel to enjoy. The first riders of the year will no doubt have to contend with lingering snow and mud as well.

The BDR folks aren’t telling us much about the new route, but there’s a whole lot of California north of lonely Benton, where the CABDR-South ends. We do know that the NorCal track will create a single BDR route from Mexico to Canada, so it must connect with the Oregon BDR. Given that, it will probably pop out of the northeast corner of the California, likely via the scenic Warner Mountains.

BDR DesertX Delights

By our count there are 16 companies contributing their products to make the Special Edition extra special. What follows are just some of the goodies on this bike.

Touratech’s Closed Cartridge conversion kit augments the front fork, topped off by a Scotts steering damper for ultimate control. Touratech also supports the rear with their Extreme rear shock. Motoz Tractionator tires provide the grip with a Dual Venture front skin and a Rallz at the rear. Cyclops lighting show the way, and Double-Take mirrors reflect the view behind while the rider relaxes on a leather seat from Rich’s Custom Seats. A full protection package from Outback Mototek protects the X when and where necessary. Topping it all off is a Wolfman Threadworks custom tankbag sewn by the Wolfman himself, Eric Hougen.

It’s Time to Support Backcountry Discovery

This amazing machine will go to the winner of the BDR drawing on January 5, 2024. That leaves plenty of time to break it in for a spring BDR ride of your choice. Entering the contest supports the 503(C) organization, as will an additional contribution. The BDR folks have done a lot to make adventure touring exciting, consider giving them a pat on the back. Become a supporter or a donor, then go for an epic ride. Their website will be there with GPX tracks, route updates, and more to help you on your way.

Arden’s first motorcycle was a Yamaha Enduro, obtained while in high school. It set the stage for decades of off-pavement exploration on dual-sports and adventure bikes. Camping in the middle of nowhere became his favorite pursuit. As a former whitewater river guide and National Park Service seasonal employee, Arden believes in wilderness, wildlife, and being kind to the earth. A self-taught writer who barely passed English classes, he has contributed adventure stories and tested motorcycles and accessories for Rider Magazine and other outlets for nearly 30 years. In that time, he’s worn out two KLR 650s and is currently following the road to the middle of nowhere on his Ténéré 700 and an aging but reliable DR-Z 400S.
