Airstream has recently introduced two additions to its lineup, catering to adventure seekers and travel enthusiasts. While not cost-effective for many, the Interstate 19X Touring Coach and the 2024 Trade Wind travel trailer offer versatility and comfort for those who can afford to explore the great outdoors without compromising on convenience.
The Interstate 19X is built on the 19-foot Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van chassis, specifically designed for outdoor and off-road enthusiasts. This Class B motorhome offers the flexibility to tackle both highways and rugged, unpaved routes, making it suitable for off-grid boondocking and traditional camping. With standard 4×4 capability and the option for all-wheel drive (AWD) on the new Mercedes-Benz chassis, adventurers can confidently navigate moderately challenging terrain and remote locations.
The exterior of the Interstate 19X features protective coatings on the lower body and front hood to shield against road debris and scratches. The addition of a Tenzing brush guard with integrated lights enhances its style but also adds practicality for off-road travel.
Storage is essential for adventure gear, and the Interstate 19X offers smart storage solutions integrated throughout the vehicle, with drawers and cabinets that offer secure transit. The flexible rear storage area has an integrated L-track system on the floors, walls, and ceiling, providing versatility for securing bikes, paddleboards, camping gear, and more.
After a day of outdoor exploration, the Interstate 19X offers a comfortable retreat. It boasts a complete wet bath with a shower, a fully equipped galley with ample prep space, and a spacious convertible sleeping/living/dining area that can be configured as a queen bed or twin beds. An onboard generator ensures power for off-grid adventures, including running the air-conditioner for maximum comfort even far from shore power hookups. Customers can opt for the E1 Package for added power and performance, which utilizes a single-fuel-source system drawing from the vehicle’s tank for the water heater, furnace, and generator.
In addition to the Interstate 19X, Airstream introduced the 2024 Trade Wind, a travel trailer designed to provide a comfortable base camp. Positioned between the International and Globetrotter model lines, the Trade Wind offers a spacious interior with all the amenities needed for a memorable road trip. The Trade Wind takes inspiration from Airstream’s eStream Concept Travel Trailer, featuring a substantial battery bank, solar array, and power monitoring system—the largest in Airstream’s history. Along with a 3-inch suspension lift for increased ground clearance, this electrical system allows flexibility in choosing campsites, whether in traditional campgrounds or remote boondocking locations. The Trade Wind ensures comfort with onboard facilities, including a bathroom, shower, kitchen, and bedroom, and the ability to run the air-conditioner without campsite electric hookups.
Airstream’s President and CEO Bob Wheeler stated,
“Trade Wind is a testament to our goal of innovating with intent and sets a new benchmark for power capabilities in our travel trailer line. “In 1958, our founder, Wally Byam, introduced what we believe is the first travel trailer that didn’t require campsite hookups, and over the decades, we’ve pushed the limits of travel through quality design and technological innovation. We’re thrilled to introduce a new model that builds upon that legacy for a new generation of customers who want the freedom to choose where and how they’re going to experience the outdoors.”
With standard power features like three chassis-integrated 270 amp-hour heated lithium Battle Born batteries, a 3,000-watt inverter/charger, a 600-watt solar input, and a SmartPlug 30 amp shore power inlet, the Trade Wind offers unparalleled freedom for travel enthusiasts. The included three-inch lift kit, recirculating water heater, SmartPlug TV and internet inlet, and fully inverted electrical outlets enhance off-grid capabilities.
The 25-foot Trade Wind comes in one-floor plan, the 25FB configuration, offering a queen bed (with optional twin beds available in early 2024). With a convertible dinette, it can comfortably accommodate up to five travelers. The interior décor packages, Terracotta and Fieldstone, add a touch of style and comfort to the living space.
With pricing starting at $199,940 MSRP for the Interstate 19X and the Trade Wind, starting at $129,400 MSRP, both are available through authorized Airstream dealers beginning September 12, 2023.
