Horizons Unlimited Mountain Madness (HUMM) Cascades 2021 Event
Described as “the best 48 hours of my life” by one participant (who later had to apologize to his wife for saying that), Horizons Unlimted’s HUMM event is essentially a make-your-own-adventure, off-road scavenger hunt. Riders form teams of two or four and spend two days chasing tags through British Columbia’s Cascade Range. As there is no set course, you are not following other riders and instead have the choice to get creative in your winning strategies.
Participants will use teamwork, riding, and navigation skills along variable terrain, including pavement, gravel, and single-track—all with snow-topped mountains, refreshing rivers, and cool valleys as your surroundings.
Hosted by Horizons Unlimited, the event is going into its fifth season in Canada. In the past, HU founders Grant and Susan Johnson—both veteran motorcycle riders who have traveled all over the world—have organized HUMM events in Spain, Morocco, and the States. As Grant says, the event is “much copied, but never beaten!”
Here are the team classes for entry. You can choose one of four.
- Map Singles: Single-cylinder bikes navigating with a compass (no GPS)
- Map Multis: Multi-cylinder bikes navigating with a compass (no GPS)
- GPS Singles: Single-cylinder bikes navigating with a GPS or satnav
- GPS Multis: Multi-cylinder bikes navigating with a GPS or satnav
Dates for HUMM are July 16-18, 2021. These dates may be postponed, depending on Covid developments.

Horizons Unlimited Traveler’s Meeting
These meetings are a heck of a lot of fun. Not only are you guaranteed to find like-minded friends and riding partners, there is so much information jammed into one weekend that there’s no way you’ll go away empty-handed.
My husband and I attended our first HU event in 2015, just weeks before heading out on a round-the-world adventure. Although we felt properly prepared by that point, we both still had a lot to learn, which this weekend provided. For example, we discovered a more efficient way to change a tire and what lightweight tools to bring. Before leaving, we were able to off-load a few pounds of gear. As I was going to write about our trip and sell stories to magazines, I found the photography courses valuable and informative.
The Travellers Meeting is like a conference for motorcycle travelers and might be the only place you’ll find people encouraging you about your trip idea instead of telling you you’re going to die. For no other reason, go to a meeting to gain the confidence you may need to stand up to friends and family who don’t often venture outside the comfort zone. Maybe you’ll even convince someone to come along.
You’ll learn everything from GPS skills to how to cross borders to what to pack on your bike for those longer excursions. Presenters will tell their tales and leave you motivated to get out on that weekend, week-long, or year-long ride. You’ll learn from the experts, and there are many opportunities to connect.
