While exploring Overland Expo West I was searching specifically for vehicles that have the potential to carry an explorer as far as their heart might desire. Naturally, not all travelers are the same; their needs and the routes they might explore vary. Some might desire a large vehicle that can carry a family in comfort, some might require a practical and capable habitat for a couple, and others might need nothing more than a little Jeep that can. While there was an almost endless array of drool-worthy vehicles to admire, the following are vehicles that caught my eye and kept my attention. Please note there are a few exceptional vehicles not listed here that caught my attention and intrigued me; those will be featured on Expedition Portal in more detail in the coming weeks.
Gear Offroad Forward Control
Guaranteed to turn heads, the Jeep 1st Gear Offroad Forward Control is a unique vehicle designed to easily handle the most challenging terrains. Built with off-road enthusiasts in mind, this model combines rugged durability with advanced engineering. Its distinctive forward control design places the driver over the front wheels, enhancing visibility and maneuverability on rough trails. The vehicle boasts winches front and rear, a robust suspension system, and ample ground clearance, making it adept at navigating obstacles. The overland setup of this vehicle is as simple as can be and emphasizes ease of use and outdoor living, making this a great vehicle for journeys to warm climates over rugged terrain. And no matter where you might find yourself, this Jeep will draw your eye regardless of the surrounding scenery.
The Double Dutch World Safari Atego
This world-traveling Atego 4WD truck, minimally modified with a winch, lights, and new tires, has proven its reliability over 175,000 trouble-free kilometers, except for routine maintenance and Michelin XZL tire replacements. Originally planning a five-year global journey, the owners extended their travels to 25 years, necessitating a larger, more comfortable vehicle. This rigid two-axle Atego truck is a militarized commercial design, last produced between 1999 and 2004. Featuring a short wheelbase for maneuverability, a Euro 3 engine, and an Engel fridge replacing the middle seat, the truck prioritizes comfort and scenic enjoyment. An observation hatch, formerly equipped with a light machine gun mount, remains a useful feature for wildlife spotting.

Patty Upton’s 1966 Jeep CJ-5
Last but not least, Patty Upton’s 1966 Jeep CJ-5, known as the “Sand Ship Discovery,” is a testament to the spirit of adventure and determination. This iconic vehicle carried Patty and her late husband, Loren Upton, on an extraordinary journey that included the first all-land crossing of the notorious Darién Gap. This treacherous stretch between Panama and Colombia had thwarted many adventurers, but the Uptons successfully navigated it over 741 grueling days. Their journey spanned over five years and covered more than 56,000 miles, ultimately earning them a place in the 1992 Guinness Book of Records.
The couple’s journey began in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, on June 15, 1984, and concluded at the Sletness Lighthouse in Norway on July 4, 1989. Along the way, they faced numerous challenges, including navigating some of the world’s most difficult terrains. Despite these obstacles, their Jeep CJ-5, a militarized version designed for rugged use, proved to be a reliable companion. This little Jeep is proof that all you really need to travel the world is courage, a bit of cash, curiosity, and a capable vehicle.
