KRUG Expedition Unveils 2024 Rhino XL for Europe

Crafted in Austria, the Rhino XL is the culmination of KRUG’s dedication to creating supremely capable and “affordable” expedition vehicles; KRUG claims that the Rhino XL is “the world’s most capable expedition vehicle.” That is a bold claim indeed. The Rhino XL’s primary limitation is the nearly half-million dollar price tag, which puts it out of the reach of the vast majority of overlanders. But, there is a market for vehicles in this price bracket, and the Rhino XL is actually well priced when compared to relatively comparable vehicles such as the Earthroamer SX, 27North 30A Ascender, and Global Expedition Vehicles Pangea Sky Lounge that all command a purchase price in the region of $1,200,000.

The Rhino XL will be built on the robust Mercedes Atego chassis and available in three configurations: the XL 175, XL 200, and XL Business. Each variant is designed to endure extended off-grid travel. Incorporating feedback from seasoned adventurers, KRUG states that they have refined the Rhino XL to offer enhanced living spaces and amenities.

CEO of KRUG Expedition, Slawa Knorr, underscores the company’s commitment to empowering travelers to realize their dreams:

“Our goal at KRUG Expedition is to help travelers embark on the journey of their dreams and boldly explore the world at their own speed in our tough, dependable, and comfortable expedition vehicles. Our new 2024 Project Rhino XL series presents fantastic options made to accommodate every type of traveler. Whether someone is looking for the ultimate family adventure vehicle, or the client is a professional nomad, the new KRUG Expedition Project Rhino XL provides the means to deliver a truly one-of-a-kind adventure.”

KRUG Expedition constructs each module utilizing reinforced sandwich panels, ensuring exceptional insulation that effectively wards off interior condensation. These panels are engineered to minimize energy consumption in both extreme cold and hot climates. Drawing inspiration from the resilient armor of the rhinoceros, hence the name, KRUG Expedition further enhances durability by outfitting the walls and ceiling panels of each XL module with a robust GRP laminate. This laminate boasts a far higher strength-to-weight ratio than steel and resists damage, ensuring prolonged longevity and reliability in challenging conditions.

KRUG Expedition’s Project Rhino XL interior packages are designed to elevate comfort. The two largest models of the Project Rhino XL feature a permanent double bed and two bunk beds for supplementary sleeping areas. The kitchen of the Project Rhino XL is equipped with convenient countertop space, a stainless-steel sink, and a Miele induction cooktop with two cooking zones as well as a Vitrifrigo Slim 150 refrigerator and freezer and an optional dish and cutlery set. An optional dinette sliding table can convert into an additional sleeping surface, and the interior flooring is water-resistant vinyl. The main freshwater tank of the KRUG Project Rhino XL offers an impressive storage capacity of up to 144 gallons, guaranteeing a steady supply of clean water to a spacious combo bathroom with a fully functional shower and toilet; all three Project Rhino models feature a 75-gallon gray water tank.

The standardized energy supply system is compact, incorporating a modular expandable battery bank comprising up to three lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 300 amp-hours each at 25.2 volts. This configuration allows a maximum capacity of 900 amp-hours, equivalent to approximately 22 kilowatts of energy. Leveraging lithium-ion technology known for its high energy density, the batteries feature an integrated energy management system.

An inverter with an output of 5,000 watts supplies the power modules with 230-volt alternating current, and multiple energy sources are available for charging the batteries, including solar, shore power, and connection to the truck’s alternator via a charge controller while the engine is running. Another option is to install an additional alternator on the chassis to double the charging current while driving. An optional external 3-kilowatt diesel generator with an automatic start function is also available. The energy supply system features an emergency start function, allowing the engine to be started using module batteries if the vehicle starter batteries become discharged.

Equipped with a permanent all-wheel drive system, differential locks on both front and rear axles, and a “distribution” gearbox, the Rhino XL is designed to tackle challenging terrains effortlessly. Selectable ABS and an optional semi-automatic tire inflation system further enhance its off-road prowess. Each Project Rhino XL is equipped with four 365/80 R20 tires, suitable for all types of terrain. One of the primary reasons to travel with a large truck is that you can bring all your tools and toys with you. The Project Rhino XL offers impressive storage capacity, featuring durable high-grade storage boxes and a generously proportioned garage space integrated into the rear of the vehicle. An optional roof rack is available, securely mounted on the driver cab, and equipped with an LED light for enhanced visibility in low-light conditions.

With a starting price of $485,000, the Rhino XL is competitive in the pool within which it swims. Whether this vehicle is indeed the most capable expedition vehicle is impossible to ascertain without spending a reasonable amount of time exploring the developing world with the truck, but, on paper, the Rhino XL certainly does seem to offer everything a global explorer could ask for, and then some. Besides, the vehicle is built in Europe, a continent renowned for its high quality of artistry and highly experienced travelers.
