Featured Build: 6×6 Defender Camper

There are some things that amaze me every time I see them, and ground up vehicle rebuilds are one of them. I’m not sure if it’s the creativity, countless man hours, or the love, sweat, and tears poured into them by the owners, but they always have a special vibe that inspires me to get out and wrench on my own projects.

It was this feeling that struck me a few months back when I stumbled upon a particularly interesting build, one that is both thorough and unique; Jitterbug’s 6×6 Defender restoration. A civilian variant of the Perentie military truck, it served as a tour bus in Darwin for years before finding its way to the classifieds in a rather sorry state. Like any great builder though, Jitterbug saw the potential underneath and picked her up.

The ensuing project replaced darn near everything from paint to power-train and includes many additions to both the interior and exterior. We won’t waste any more of your time blabbering, but instead let you check out some of the progress photos taken throughout the build. We hope that you enjoy following this process as much as we have, and take the time to look through the full thread found below.

The 6×6 Defender Build Thread

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Chris didn’t receive a real taste of the outdoors until moving to Prescott, Arizona, in 2009. While working on his business degree, he learned to fly and spent his weekends exploring the Arizona desert and high country. It was there that he fell in love with backcountry travel and four-wheel drive vehicles, eventually leading him to Overland Journal and Expedition Portal. After several years of honing his skills in writing, photography, and off-road driving, Chris now works for the company full time as Expedition Portal's Senior Editor while living full-time on the road.
