The E-350 4×4 is a favorite on our forum with recent examples including this 2002, 2010, and 2006 with a Stahl Service body and pop top. There are many reasons why I love this platform for travel but above all else, it provides generous interior living space within a modest external footprint. Cue today’s 2006 Ford E-350 (182,000 miles) that showcases an array of premium parts, a Quigley 4WD conversion (and Agile Offroad upgrades), a well-equipped camper interior, and is priced at $40,000. Needless to say, that is no small sum of money but it’s 1/3 of the price of many AWD Sprinters and significantly less than many comparable E-350s (reference this $98,000 2003 Quadvan and $82,000 1999 XLT). This affordable rolling home is a great option for travel as documented by Driving Line, Michaelrossssss, and Josh Evans. It’s also a great rig for international adventures; reference Daniela Wagner’s trips along Africa’s West Coast and in Saudi Arabia.

I have been a van owner since 1968. At 72 years old with a bum knee, I am no longer chasing board surfing waves in Mexico. I purchased it in April 2017 with 145,000 miles and I have added 37,000 trouble-free-miles. I did not get to use this van off-road for more than 100 miles, and even fewer miles in the 4WD mode. The previous owner is a neighbor and he kept meticulous records of all mileage, fuel consumption, destinations, all receipts from repairs and maintenance, original window stickers, and sales brochures. My goal was to have an off-grid, camp-ready vehicle with a lower center of gravity and tons of elbow room to explore isolated places. Mandatory for me was to have ample fresh water (42 gallons), a large full-time fridge, and to have the convenience of a microwave oven. All my other cooking was done outside with a portable propane Coleman stove/grill.”
