Yakima Introduces RibCage, a Heavy-Duty Track System for Jeep Wrangler Hardtop Models

Jeep hardtop roof panels are designed from SMC (Sheet Molding Compound), essentially a compressed fiberglass base that will safely support a dynamic weight of up to 150 pounds (70kg). That is half the weight of the average rooftop tent. To safely increase the roof carrying capacity of your Jeep Wrangler hardtop Yakima has announced the release of RibCage, a high-capacity, externally-mounted track system. The new product is designed to increase the off-road carrying capacity of 4-door JK and JL Jeep Wrangler hardtops specifically, and with RibCage, Jeep owners can safely manage heavy loads on the roof, such as recovery gear, rooftop tents, and a wide array of other off-road accessories.

Ribcage

RibCage is a permanent hardtop installation that comes in two models similar to the FrontRunner JL Extreme mounting system (with an estimated dynamic load rating of 220 pounds). The RibCage JL 4DR is compatible with the 2018-current Jeep Wrangler JL 4dr Hardtop, while the RibCage JK 4DR is compatible with the 2007-2017 Jeep Wrangler JK 4dr Hardtop. Both models are identical except for the specific components that mount to the Wrangler’s internal supports. The system is off-road rated up to 330 pounds for dynamic loads and up to 825 pounds for static loads.

The new track system provides a versatility of mounting options, while the rugged internal supports ensure the roof is safe for long-term use carrying heavy loads. RibCage’s parts do not interfere with passenger or cargo space, and users can remove the Freedom Panels with the system installed. The hardtop is still easily removable by unbolting the internal supports.

Ribcage

RibCage is designed to meet the demands of Jeep owners who need a product made specifically for demanding off-road use. Todd Scott, Category Manager of Yakima, explained that

“RibCage raises the bar of capacity above the competition, and our rigorous in-lab and real-world testing methods back that up. It’s an ideal pairing of low-profile utilitarian track and robust internal supports that we know Jeep owners have been looking for.”

The system features 48-inch HD Track sections that allow for 2 or 3 crossbar setups or numerous tower configurations with the LockNLoad platform, each of which is sold separately from the RibCage track system. Four towers will support up to 220 pounds, while six will ensure the entire 330-pound weight limit.

Ribcage

Both the Yakima’s RibCage JL and JK retail for $600. Jeep owners can complete the setup with the SkyRise rooftop tent, RoadShower portable shower, MajorShady awning, or other Yakima accessories.
