Video of the Week :: Lifestyle Overland—Radioactive Mines and Incredible Utah Canyons

It’s no secret that being a full-time YouTuber is a lot of work, and the ability to produce inspiring videos with cinematic production and a gripping storyline requires enormous dedication. Consequently, just a handful of overlanding channels stand the test of time and consistently hit these markers, and Lifestyle Overland is one of them.

Lifestyle Overland, a family of four (Kevin, Sarah, Caroline, and Abigail), spend their time “exploring the mountains, deserts, plains, and even arctic landscapes of North America.” In 2018 parents Keven and Sarah quit their jobs, sold almost everything, and hit the road as full-time travelers to become full-time YouTubers. The couple first headed north to the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk, NWT, then to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Their channel gained momentum, and a “crazy leap of faith turned into a full-time, self-supporting gig.” Today the Lifestyle Overland Youtube has over 260,000 subscribers and 291 videos. In addition, they have a podcast, website, and their own outdoor equipment shop, Overland Provision.

Today Kevin heads out on a solo adventure with friends Caleb and Matt to explore Utah’s backcountry shortly after record-breaking snowfall. Right off the bat, they face challenging conditions and have to alter their route for safety and reduce their impact on the boggy trails. As always, the episode features stunning camera work, excellent storytelling, drool-worthy camp cooking, and equipment feedback throughout. If you’re curious about some of the pros and cons of Starlink satellite internet, Kevin’s walk-through will be particularly interesting. Furthermore, it delves into the history of Utah’s uranium mining communities, with the team exploring what’s left of these remote settlements. Finally, you’ll enjoy a glimpse into how the Toyota 4Runner and Ford Bronco can be outfitted for travel (check out the Adventure Builds section of their website for more info).

If you’ve ever been curious about what Utah offers the overland traveler, I highly recommend watching this episode. I’m currently based in Europe and found myself obsessing over the epic trails and diverse natural majesty offered by this incredible state. If you’d like to keep abreast of Lifestyle Overland’s latest adventures, then be sure to follow along on Instagram.

No money in the bank, but gas in the tank. Our resident Bikepacking Editor Jack Mac is an exploration photographer and writer living full-time in his 1986 Vanagon Syncro but spends most days at the garage pondering why he didn’t buy a Land Cruiser Troopy. If he’s not watching the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, he can be found mountaineering for Berghaus, sea kayaking for Prijon, or bikepacking for Surly Bikes. Jack most recently spent two years on various assignments in the Arctic Circle but is now back in the UK preparing for his upcoming expeditions—looking at Land Cruisers.
