Gon Dirtin’s Linhbergh Nguyen and Karissa Hosek have launched a brilliant new five-part series, Gon Cookin’, in which they recreate guest’s favorite dishes into camp-friendly versions. Presented by XOverland and driven by Mobil 1, the series is part Chef’s Table, part cooking class, and features recipes from Marco Hernandez, Stephanie Tea, Bound for Nowhere’s Mary Ashley Krogh, and a special appearance by Linhbergh’s mom, Hai.
In this Video of the Week, Linhbergh and Karissa join forces with Mali Mish’s Dan and Marlene Lin to create a camp-friendly version of Dan’s favorite dish, Lu Rou Fan. This Taiwanese classic, a braised pork rice bowl, is a culinary adventure in itself, featuring skin-on pork belly, shiitake mushrooms, bok choy, boiled eggs, yellow pickled radish, and a blend of fragrant spices. After Dan showcases the recipe, the team sets off to the mountains, where Linhbergh whips up a quick and fun camp-style Lu Rou Fan with ground pork and all the fixings.
If you aren’t familiar with Dan, Marlene, and their three children, Ava, Mila, and Luka, the family is currently traveling the world in their 170 Mercedes Sprinter van and were chosen as Expedition Portal’s 2023 Overlanders of the Year. When asked about their hands-down favorite meals, Marlene points to a monster-sized carne asada burrito, while Dan’s go-to is crispy-skinned Peking duck with a fluffy bun, spring onions, and sauce. Delicious.
