Try This Wireless Winch Hack (Hint: It Involves a Garage Door Opener)

Have you ever been in a situation where you wished you had in-cab winch controls?  Do you own a vehicle with both a wireless winch controller and a garage door system, such as  HomeLink? If so, you can program your garage door opener to operate your winch. I have used this method with Toyota and Lexus HomeLink systems and Smittybilt X2O winch controllers successfully, and other brands should also be compatible based on the operating frequency. As long as your wireless winch controller operates on 310Mhz, 315Mhz, or 390Mhz, then this trick should work for you. Here are programming instructions for Jeep, Ford, GM, Dodge, Mercedes, Land Rover, or Toyota/Lexus.

Garage door openers operate in the 300 to 400Mhz range, the same frequency most wireless winches utilize. You can check your remote or manufacturer’s website to confirm compatibility or just try to program it and see if your devices can communicate.  For HomeLink programming, hold down the desired button until it starts blinking. When blinking starts, hold the winch button until HomeLink blinking speeds up. Once programmed and tested, you now have in-cab winch controls. You can even program your winch to regular garage door or keychain-style openers.

There are general safety tips to consider with this method, which include:

  • Turn off wireless controller power when not winching. You don’t want a random garage door opener to spool out your winch line while you’re driving on the highway.
  • Always use a spotter when winching and make sure hands/fingers are clear before operating the winch.
  • Use short, frequent button presses to avoid going into programming mode.
  • If you’re winching yourself, make sure your vehicle is in neutral, you’re steering toward your anchor point, and the brakes are off. The same rules apply if you’re winching another vehicle.
  • Stop winching periodically to check your winch line at the drum and fairlead.

In a world full of high-tech apps and companies trying to sell you another tool, this is a convenient and free way to enhance the functionality of your vehicle’s winch.
