Truck/SUV Drawer Buyer’s Guide

No matter how much we try to trim down our kits, more and more gear continues to find its way into the back of our rigs. As these items continue to pile up, it becomes increasingly difficult to locate specific items amongst the mountain of countless duffels, tool rolls, and pelican cases—not to mention the difficulty in securing all of these items safely in place. The best way we have found to organize and safely store our payloads has been with the use of a proper drawer system. Storage solutions can range from an inexpensive DIY arrangement to the exotic, costing in excess of $5,000 in many cases. Below, you will find an alphabetical list of some of the most popular drawer systems on the market, guaranteed to fit any budget. There are two categories: truck, and SUV. Of course, many of the storage solutions found below will fit a plethora of different rigs which is why the dimensions are listed, rather than specific applications.

 

Things to consider

  1. Construction and materials: The materials that make up this list range from HDPE to plywood. Some are weatherproof (such as Decked) yet many are only weather resistant (such as Tuffy Security Products). The majority of these drawer systems are intended to live out their lives in either the back of an SUV or in the bed of a truck, under a cap or tonneau cover (such as A.R.E.).
  2. Weather stripping and seals: Many of the provided drawer systems are intended to live in the elements, however, not all are completely sealed. Some claim to keep water and dust from entering the drawers and covering your gear, while others do a moderate job of sealing out the elements.
  3. Securing things: Any drawer system on this list should suffice to secure and store most payloads. However, it is also just as important, if not more so, to secure the drawer system in place. Make sure that the drawer system that you choose can be secured in your specific application. As I stated above, many drawers will fit many vehicles, but it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure the mounting points in your vehicle are up to the task
