The Maxus eTerron 9 4WD Debuts in the United Kingdom

The new Maxus eTerron 9, an all-electric vehicle from the Chinese automotive manufacturer Maxus, represents the company’s latest foray into the expanding electric vehicle (EV) market. As a brand known for its light commercial vehicles and vans, Maxus has gradually shifted its focus toward developing EVs to meet the growing global demand for sustainable transportation.

The eTerron 9, visually quite similar to the Rivian R1T pickup, is positioned to offer an efficient, environmentally friendly alternative for both individual and commercial users.

Designed to meet the increasing needs of urban drivers and businesses, the Maxus eTerron 9 is marketed as a multipurpose vehicle that combines utility and innovation. It is part of a broader strategy by the parent company, SAIC Motor Corporation, to transition to cleaner energy solutions and reduce carbon emissions. SAIC Motor, one of the largest car manufacturers in China (with total sales of more than 5 million vehicles in 2023), has been accelerating its push toward electrification, and the eTerron 9 is one of the company’s newest additions to its electric vehicle lineup.

The eTerron 9 boasts an electric drivetrain that delivers a smooth and quiet driving experience. Maxus has designed the vehicle with the practicalities of modern-day city driving in mind, particularly for delivery services and fleet operators looking to transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric ones. As we all know, vehicles designed for delivery and commercial use tend to be equally well suited to overland travel, especially if they are equipped with 4WD or AWD.

The dual-motor configuration features a 170-horsepower motor at the front axle and a 272-horsepower motor at the rear axle, offering a combined power output designed to enhance both performance and handling. This setup provides improved acceleration and a dynamic driving experience, with the rear motor delivering more power for greater control. Maxus has equipped the eTerron 9 with a battery pack that supports a substantial driving range, making it suitable for daily commutes and longer trips. While the exact driving range may vary depending on factors such as load weight and driving conditions, the vehicle is expected to offer a range competitive with other electric vehicles in its category.

Charging options for the eTerron 9 include standard AC charging and DC fast charging. With a fast charger, the vehicle’s battery can be replenished quickly, minimizing downtime for fleet operators and individual users alike. The practicality of rapid charging makes the eTerron 9 more appealing for high-demand usage, where keeping a vehicle operational throughout the day is critical. Standard charging times, while longer, are designed to accommodate overnight charging, which will suit drivers with predictable routes or schedules.

Inside, the Maxus eTerron 9 offers a functional and comfortable cabin that balances the needs of commercial use with modern conveniences. The interior design is straightforward yet ergonomic, ensuring that the driver has easy access to key controls. Maxus has incorporated a digital instrument cluster and an infotainment system with connectivity features, helping drivers remain productive while on the road. The vehicle’s layout includes ample storage space for both cargo and personal items, emphasizing its utility for delivery services and business users who need space for tools, packages, or equipment.

Safety is a critical consideration for Maxus, and the eTerron 9 is equipped with a range of safety features aimed at protecting both the driver and other road users. Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are expected to be available, offering features such as collision warning, lane departure assistance, and autonomous emergency braking. These systems are designed to mitigate the risk of accidents, which is especially important in urban environments where traffic conditions can change rapidly. The regenerative braking system also contributes to both safety and efficiency by converting kinetic energy back into electricity, helping to extend the vehicle’s range.

The retail price for the Maxus eTerron 9 is expected to start at around €72,900 ($81,400 USD) when it launches in Europe. Sales are slated to begin in late 2024, and more specific pricing details may vary depending on regional markets.
