The Grounded G2 Electric Campervan for Sustainable, Slow Overland Travel

Straight off the bat, the G2 Campervan reminds us vaguely of a Mercedes Benz Vario; this is a good thing. The Vario has a reputation as an excellent overland vehicle, and we have seen them everywhere, from Gabon to Guatemala. What they lack in off-road driving ability, they make up for with space—acres and acres of precious space. The all-electric, all-wheel drive G2 Campervan has much to offer a traveler who doesn’t mind rolling down the smooth path at a gentle pace.

The fully electric, solar-equipped, high-roof campervan offers an eco-conscious way to explore; with 250 miles per charge, range anxiety will be a reality the further you travel from “civilization.” At the heart of the Grounded G2 is its built-in BrightDrop high-voltage battery, providing sustainable power for electric adventures. One of the standout features of the G2 is its 640 watts of solar panels. These panels not only contribute to a sustainable, off-grid adventure but also keep the electronics and appliances running smoothly.

Grounded G2

Grounded CEO Sam Shapir said,

“The G2 is radically different from any other offering on the market, it’s a profound step toward a future of fully electrified motorhomes, and makes sustainable travel truly achievable. We’ve designed the G2 to be as flexible as possible, and our truly modular interior delivers on the promise of a continually upgradable RV interior. Over time, as your life changes and your use cases change, the vehicle can change with you. Customers can replace the modules themselves by removing some fasteners, taking out one module, and inserting a new one.”

Inside the G2, there is a lot of floor space for activities (to misquote Step Brothers). A queen-sized bed is complimented by bench seating with a flip-up table for meals or planning your next social media post. The kitchen comes complete with a fridge/freezer, sink, and induction stove. The Grounded G2 offers a modular interior furniture system that provides “ultimate flexibility and comfort.” The high-quality materials allow you to transform your campervan layout to suit your needs, whether it’s extra seating, a dining area, or a bed. You can select furniture components to construct your ideal interior, with expert advice available to ensure you get the perfect layout, so there are no collapsing bunk beds here. The modular furniture system also maximizes space efficiency, ensuring plenty of living and storage space.

The G2 is equipped with cutting-edge integrated electronics and proprietary software. A host of sensors ensure precise control of your surroundings, usage patterns, and issue diagnosis. Over time, the software learns from your habits, optimizing your experience and extending your vehicle’s lifespan through over-the-air updates.

Charging your G2 is relatively hassle-free as you can access a national (US) network of vehicle chargers or charge at campsites, RV parks, or at home with a mains connection or home charging point for faster refueling. Should you be brave or competent enough to head further afield, you may have to ensure that you have independent charging capacity.

Based in Detroit, Grounded was reportedly established by ex-Tesla and Space-X engineers, and the team is made up of engineers, designers, and architects from around the world.

The Grounded G2 is available to order now with pricing from—wait for it—$187,000.
