Many of us dream of a simpler life without sacrificing the best of the modern world. Tiny homes and minimalism promise a way of living stripped down to the essentials; less is more, or so they say. Overland travel offers much of the same allure, and we have often seriously considered a travel future based on a base camp. But not all base camps are equal. The Aero Build Coast is a classic concept reimagined. While we could not imagine dragging this trailer up the side of a mountain or across a deep sandy beach, we could imagine towing it to a beautiful, safe, off-grid area from where we could head out on sorties to explore in our fully equipped tow vehicle.
To understand the Coast trailer concept, it helps to understand the manufacturer and where they come from. Aero Build is a young, hip, and energetic company based in Nashville, Tennessee. The thriving business builds a range of trendy trailers for mobile coffee shops, bars, and retail sites. These are the type of trailers you can expect to find at high-end events in high-end neighborhoods. Naturally, the team would leverage that talent toward a travel trailer that would not be out of place in a Kirsten Dirksen feature.
Aero Build is marketing the trailer as an all-electric, luxury recreational vehicle for modern living, “the most advanced, off-grid capable, luxury travel trailer of its size.” It seems the ideal off-grid trailer for the stylish, adventurous couple or small family who likely drive a new Defender.
The interior’s light wood, dark wood, fresh white, and pure black color palette neatly reflect and soften the white and black exterior of the Coast trailer. This four-sleeper incorporates Smeg brand appliances, premium finishes, and Havelock wool insulation to offer a comfortable home away from home or on the road.
Taking a virtual tour of the Coast via the Aero Build website, we enter the slick and fashionable trailer and are greeted by the pop-up drinks cabinet and coffee machine, a fully appointed kitchen that includes drawers and cupboards, a full-size fridge/freezer combo, a microwave oven (which could be replaced with a convection oven), sink, induction cooker top and plenty of countertop workspace. From the comfort of the dinette, which doubles as a queen size bed, you could watch TV or peer out of the large, frameless windows that fill the small space with natural light and fresh air. This living space is perfect for couples to relax or work off-grid before sundowners and dinner.
The eco-friendly Moen water-saving shower head uses 50 percent less water, and the award-winning Laveo Dry Flush electric toilet eliminates having to deal with blackwater, sewage, or lingering odors (but at $1.50 per “flush” it’s not necessarily a cost-effective option). Behind a privacy curtain, the cozy and well-lit bedroom/bathroom is a bit of a compromise as the bed, at 49 x 81 inches, is smaller than the dinette bed to accommodate the bathroom, vanity mirror, basin, smart TV, and wardrobe closet. Larger, or less affectionate couples, may choose to deploy the dinette bed and sleep separately. Alternatively, Elon Musk could park the Coast outside the new Nevada Tesla factory and leave the meeting room couch.
Speaking of Musk, the EV-centric Coast features 1,360 watts of solar and 810 amp-hour lithium battery power, a Victron battery management system, and an optional Starlink connection. Systems such as air-conditioning, battery, water tank, kick-toe heater, and lighting can be managed via three Firefly onboard touch screens as well as remotely from the convenience of your smartphone. The Coast starts at $124,000, and Aero Build is now accepting pre-orders with a $1,000 deposit.
