Stōd Gear Company Woodgaiter :: Field Tested

At Overland Journal, we have a soft spot for small businesses and appreciate the opportunity to review and feature products from aspiring entrepreneurs. Enter Stōd Gear and their budding line of storage solutions for overlanders. Over the past year, I have been using their Woodgaiter, a simple and robust firewood hauler that doubles as a utility mat.

The Woodgaiter is a 30- by 58-inch mat made from vinyl-coated polyester. The webbing straps and handles are sewn into the panel using polyester threading and are all UV resistant to endure prolonged exposure on a rack or in the bed of a pickup. All hardware is MIL-SPEC acetal plastic that is both UV and cold-weather resistant. All product functions work with gloved hands in extreme conditions.

The Woodgaiter has room for two standard gas-station wood bundles and the kindling and fire-starting materials needed to get a campfire started. Those smaller items stow in a separate sleeve that secures in place with Velcro. Once the gaiter is loaded, the entire bundle of firewood gets rolled up, with the cinching straps buckled and pulled tight. Then the nylon side panels are cinched around the ends using drawcords that neatly stow in small pockets to prevent snagging. The Woodgaiter is multi-use, also serving as a work mat or a heavy-duty storage sleeve for trash bags at the end of the trip. Stōd is a veteran-owned company, and its products are made in the USA.
