Scott Brady’s Overlanding 101 Aims to Guide a New Generation of Vehicle-Based Adventurers

With the growing popularity of overland travel, a new field guide promises to help beginners and intermediate explorers navigate the fundamentals of vehicle-based adventure. Overlanding 101: A Field Guide to Vehicle-Based Adventure Travel will be released through Adams Media on May 20, 2025. Written by Scott Brady, a seasoned global traveler and the publisher of Overland Journal and Expedition Portal, the book is designed as a practical, experience-based introduction to the overlanding lifestyle. The book can be ordered on Amazon here: https://a.co/d/bdGTnoN

Scott is no stranger to the rigors of long-distance, self-reliant vehicle travel. Scott Brady, CEO of Overland International, has circumnavigated the planet three times and was the first overlander to cross all seven continents and brings decades of travel experience and technical know-how to the book, having explored every type of terrain with a vast variety of vehicles. Scott lives and breathes overlanding.

Overlanding 101 distills that experience into an accessible guidebook that walks readers through the planning, outfitting, and execution of overland journeys. While the book includes inspirational stories and images, its core is instructional. According to the publisher, readers can expect detailed advice on vehicle selection and modification, route planning, essential gear, and responsible travel practices. In addition to these foundational topics, the book also touches on off-road driving techniques, emergency preparedness, and strategies for low-impact camping.

Scott describes the book’s goal as helping people of all experience levels feel empowered to explore remote destinations confidently.

Scott says,

“Overlanding empowers people to break free from the ordinary and truly experience the extraordinary. This book will help anyone—whether they’re planning a weekend trip or a global expedition—start their adventure with confidence.”

The book also benefits from the editorial input of the Overland Journal team, who contribute technical insight, field-tested gear recommendations, and expert commentary throughout the text. Full-color photography, drawn from Brady’s personal archive and global travels, adds visual context and a sense of place to the instruction.

The timing of the release reflects a sustained rise in interest in overland travel, particularly in North America. While the practice of using vehicles for extended remote travel has long been established in parts of Africa and Australia, it has only recently gained popular, widespread recognition in the US and Canada. Brady’s work—through media, expeditions, and consulting—has played a key role in that transition. His background includes collaborations with major automotive brands such as Toyota, Land Rover, and INEOS (Grenadier), and he has served as a consultant to various media outlets, including Top Gear.

Overlanding 101 will be available in both print and digital formats through major retailers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Priced at $28, the book offers a comprehensive entry point for those curious about the overlanding lifestyle and a structured refresher for those with some experience looking to sharpen their skills.

Overlanding 101 arrives on May 20, 2025. More information about the book and its author can be found at scottbrady.com.
