Rivian is adopting Tesla’s Supercharger standard for its R1T and R1S 4x4s, as well as new models going forward.
Auto manufacturers are slowly converging on a single charging structure for EVs in North America (the North American Charging Standard), and Tesla’s Supercharger network is by far the most robust, reliable, and extensive on the continent. Historically, Supercharger stations were exclusive to Tesla owners only, leaving other brands to either rely on third-party networks like Electrify America or invest in their own. That has shifted in the last few weeks, however, as other OEMs, like Ford and GM, have struck Supercharger deals with Tesla as well. With over 12,000 Superchargers sprinkled throughout the US and Canada, planning trips in your Rivian just got a lot easier.
RJ Scaringe, the founder, and CEO of Rivian, said: “We’re excited to work with Tesla and to see collaborations like this help advance the world toward carbon neutrality. The adoption of the North American Charging Standard will enable our existing and future customers to leverage Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network while we continue to build out our Rivian Adventure Network. We look forward to continuing to find new ways to accelerate EV adoption.”
We have been impressed with both the R1T and the R1S as overland platforms in testing for Expedition Portal and Overland Journal. Rivian’s rapidly expanding Rivian Adventure Network, which aims to install charging stations at more remote locations than your average interstate truck stop, also signals the company’s commitment to our kinds of travel. Range anxiety is the number one obstacle for many overland travelers in adopting EVs, and this sea-change in recent weeks for charging standards, including Rivian adopting Tesla’s Supercharger standard, should help calm those nerves. Access to the Supercharger network for Rivian owners will start in 2024.
