Overland Classifieds :: 2022 Mercedes Sprinter 4×4

The Mercedes Sprinter is a figurehead of the vanlife movement, and the 4WD variant has become a popular choice for overlanding. Long-lived motors and drivetrains, respectable economy, well-equipped interiors, refined driving experience, and generous interior living space versus modest external footprint are just some of the benefits. In stock form, the 4WD model offers good all-terrain performance, but thanks to extensive aftermarket support, owners can further optimize this platform for backcountry travel. Companies such as Van Compass, ARB, Agile Off-Road, and Sprinter Upgrades provide a wide array of parts, accessories, and services that enhance the Mercedes for the road less traveled. It’s, therefore, a popular choice on our forum, with recent examples including this 2022 campervan, a 2019 Winnebago Revel, and a 2007 expedition vehicle. If you’d like a better idea of how this platform performs as a full-time rolling home, check out the inspiring builds from Titan Vans, Faris and Lisa, and the Wohnmobil Center Erkelenz. In addition, see just what the Sprinter is capable of when the tarmac ends by watching Chad DeRosa push his build to the limits in this Desert Overlanding adventure. Today’s 2022 example has covered just 12,000 miles and features tasteful modifications and a partial camper conversion.

From the Seller:

I was able to find one of the very last 4×4 sprinters to roll off from the production line with a real 4WD system and a turbo diesel 6-cylinder engine. It is a short length 144, so it fits in a parking space. It’s a cargo version, so there are no windows. It’s already a future classic. 2023+ models will have AWD and a 4-cylinder motor, which is more like the Ford Transit AWD. It drives incredibly well offroad and on freeways/city streets.

Why I chose this rig:

  • I like Mercedes diesel engines. This Sprinter has their latest, most powerful V6 turbo diesel engine

  • It’s a 4WD with a real transfer case and a factory lift.

  • It’s a diesel, which means a single source of fuel for heat. I’ve added a Webasto air heater.

  • The Mercedes cabin fit and finish is incredible: great ergonomics, seats, and a massive panoramic view. It is easy to drive and reverse with multi-angle backup camera views.

  • It is a cargo van with no windows, so it’s better for soundproofing, insulation, privacy, and security.”
