Overland Classifieds :: 2017 Subaru Forester XT w/ Rooftop Tent

The Forester is a truly dual-purpose vehicle that’s engaging to drive, comfortable, reliable, and economical on-road, but rugged and capable when the tarmac ends. It’s easy to become starry-eyed with go-anywhere campers and heavily modified 4WDs, but in truth, some of the best vehicles for overlanding are compact, low-key, and relatively inexpensive (both to purchase and run).

The other evening I was chatting with my dad about the cost of driving my Vanagon Syncro compared to our old Volkswagen Passat. Here in the UK, the former cost me approximately $134 to fill and will travel around 300 miles, whereas the Passat costs $104 to the brim and will cover almost 1,000 miles. I recently paid $1,157 to explore Northern Italy, whereas the same journey would’ve cost me $300 in the Passat. The Forester is no eco machine, but it is much more efficient than most AWD vans, truck campers, and larger 4WDs, which means you’ll be able to travel further for less.

The Subaru is both a capable overlander and a great daily driver, which alleviates the need to have a second car (again saving you money) while running just one vehicle will ensure maintenance and servicing is always up to date. I love my van, but the running costs unquestionably eat into my travel budget and ultimately rob me of experiences. I’m not suggesting the Forester is a great option for full-time living, nor am I suggesting it’s especially capable. However, it is very versatile, can be uprated for technical terrain, modified to sleep inside or in a rooftop tent, and is a great cost-effective option for people that require a vehicle that’s just as comfortable commuting as exploring.

Today’s low-mileage offering is still under factory warranty, showcases premium modifications, a rooftop tent, and a custom overland interior, and is priced at $27,500.
