Overland Classifieds :: 2001 Nissan Patrol GU

Shipping an overland vehicle has always been pricey, but during the pandemic, costs skyrocketed. Amidst the global chaos, I heard countless stories of vehicles being stuck at sea or damaged in transit. For those planning to visit a country like Australia, there’s a possibility your vehicle will be further detained upon arrival for assessment (which often incurs additional expense).

A great alternative is to buy an overland vehicle in your chosen country, enjoy traveling in it, then advertise the rig for sale near the end of your adventure, and hopefully recoup most of what you spent (and potentially make a profit). Some routes are riskier, so a budget rig is sometimes a more sensible choice, as discussed in this Overland Journal podcast with our Chief Technology Officer and resident world traveler Christian Pelletier.

If you’ve ever wanted to explore Australia but don’t fancy the rigmarole of shipping, today’s overland-equipped Nissan Patrol is for you. Currently located in Queensland, this turnkey rig showcases tasteful modifications, a Howling Moon rooftop tent, and will be sold “as the whole lot, saving you the hassle of getting equipped for your future explorations.” At just $19,000 OBO, this is a lot of vehicle for the money, and if well cared for, it could easily fetch the same when it comes time to re-sell.

From the Seller:

The Patrol is fitted with a long-lived 3.0-liter diesel engine that produces 156 horsepower, 323 pound-feet of torque, and returns a combined 22 mpg. The motor is excellent and pretty economical, considering the vehicle weighs 2,850 kilograms (6,283 pounds), but it’s worth noting the gearboxes are prone to failure (fortunately, today’s example has a replacement box). The Patrol is highly regarded for its all-terrain capability, thanks to 4WD, high and low-range transfer case, locking front hubs, coil springs, electronically detachable stabilizer bar, and more.
