Overland Classifieds :: 1996 Toyota Hiace 3.0 4WD Diesel

The Toyota Hiace is an unsung hero, a vehicle that’s rarely mentioned amongst the vanlife and overlanding communities yet is widely considered one of the most reliable vans in the world. My dad bought a 2.4-liter diesel 2WD Hiace when he left the army and became a carpet layer. The van never broke down during his 26-year ownership, covering 275,000 miles, despite hauling heavy carpets every day.

It’s interesting that overlanders regularly venerate the Land Cruiser, Hilux, Tacoma, 4Runner, etc., yet the 4WD Hiace is rarely mentioned— especially when you consider that some models incorporate many of the same desirable attributes, such as selectable 4WD, hi and low range, and a locking rear differential. Today’s Super Custom Hiace has covered just 96,000 miles, features an automatic transmission, tasteful modifications, and a comfortable interior that could easily be adapted for overlanding.

From the Seller:

It was legally imported to the US at the beginning of the year with all the import documentation on hand and a clear Florida title. It is located in Central Florida, but shipping is included to the lower 48 with full-price purchase. I can assist you with worldwide shipping and give you an estimate; just let me know the location. Interior is very clean, no tears on seats nor carpet, original mats, and comes with the classic Japanese seat covers.”

The Hiace 4WD is fitted with a 3.0 motor that produces 130 horsepower and 287 pound-feet of torque (a higher output version was also offered with 145 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque). The interior is not luxurious by modern standards, but it does provide power windows, locks, and mirrors, front and rear air conditioning, electric curtains, front, middle, and rear sunroofs, and third-row seats that convert into a bed.
