Overland Classifieds :: 1992 Toyota Hiace 4×4 Diesel High Top

I’ve often championed the Toyota Hiace 4×4 for overlanding, but it hasn’t traditionally been a big hit with US travelers. However, this seems to be changing with an increasing number of these vans being imported and sold at premium prices. I’ve featured several adventure-ready examples recently, including this 1996 Super Custom Limited 4WD, 1994 4WD campervan, and 1996 diesel. The Hiace is a proven platform that’s extremely popular in the less developed parts of the world where rugged dependability is essential. Consequently, parts are readily available internationally, and there are a wide array of aftermarket components, accessories, and services on offer to uprate this van for backcountry travel. If you’d like a better idea of how this Toyota can be outfitted for adventure, check out this stunning 1994 Toyota Hiace overland camper, which traveled from the Netherlands all the way to Japan.

Alternatively, watch a full tour of this converted Toyota Hiace 4×4 on the Florb YouTube channel. Today’s low-mileage (36,776 kilometres) 1992 offering is my favourite to date and features the desirable 2.8-liter diesel motor, limited-slip rear differential, high-top roof, and tasteful modifications. Moreover, it’s priced at a bargain $16,000 OBO, which is an amazing value for such a capable turnkey rig.

From the Seller:

This van was legally imported (25+ years old) earlier this year. I’ve been driving the van over the past couple of months and it’s been great. It’s the perfect van for a full build-out by someone with talent and time, which, unfortunately, I have neither. I can put you in touch with a very talented gentleman that can do one for you if you purchase the van. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.”

The Hiace is fitted with a 2.8-liter diesel that produces 130 horsepower and 287 pound-feet of torque (a higher output model with 145 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque was also produced). A dependable motor is matched with impressive capability thanks to 4WD, locking hubs, high and low range, a limited-slip rear differential, and more. Inside, the Hiace is not especially luxurious but does feature power steering and windows, cupholders, and an aftermarket Pioneer head unit with Bluetooth connectivity.
