Nissan pickup sales are not what they should be in the US, ostensibly due to factors such as strong domestic competition, infrequent updates, lower resale value, and a smaller dealer network. Just over 50,000 Frontier units were sold in the US in 2023, as opposed to the Toyota Tacoma, selling almost 250,000 units. But that does not mean that the Frontier is a subpar vehicle. On the contrary, the Nissan pickup sells well in the rest of the world, especially the Global South, where the Japanese utility vehicle has a reputation for durability, reliability, and gritty toughness.
To boost the competitiveness of the Nissan Frontier, the 2025 model has received updates, focusing on rugged design, enhanced utility, and advanced technology. Set to arrive at Nissan dealerships later this summer, the refreshed Frontier boasts a more robust 6-foot bed option, increased towing capacity, and a larger infotainment system, reflecting customer feedback and Nissan’s stated commitment to meeting driver needs.
The updated exterior design of the 2025 Frontier emphasizes its tough, squared-off look with a revised front fascia, grille, bumper, and a new tailgate finisher for the Pro-X and Pro-4X models. Additionally, a redesigned dashboard trim, a new 17-inch alloy wheel design, and the introduction of Afterburn Orange paint enhance the Frontier’s work-and-play ethos.
Responding to the diverse needs of truck owners, the Frontier now offers the Crew Cab long-wheelbase configuration across SV, Pro-4X, and SL grades, providing a 6-foot bed suitable for larger loads. The truck’s towing capacity has increased to a maximum of 7,150 pounds, about 500 pounds more than the 2024 model, catering to both work and adventure needs.
The Pro-4X model, designed for off-road enthusiasts, features enhancements to the Intelligent Around View Monitor, allowing the off-road mode viewing function to be used while driving at speeds up to 12 mph. This improvement aids drivers in spotting obstacles during technical off-road maneuvers. The Pro-X and Pro-4X models cater to off-road adventurers with all-terrain tires, Bilstein off-road suspension components, and a rugged appearance featuring over-fenders and Lava Red tow hooks.
Safety and driver assistance technologies are now standard across all grades of the 2025 Frontier. These features include lane departure warning, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, high beam assist, and intelligent cruise control. The SL grade also includes traffic sign recognition.
The Frontier continues to deliver with a responsive, direct-injected 3.8-liter V6 engine and 9-speed automatic transmission, producing 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. It features idle stop/start technology and active brake limited slip, with the Pro-4X model upgrading to an electronic locking differential for better traction on varied surfaces.
For cargo carrying, the Frontier offers the Utili-Track system with adjustable tie-down cleats and an available spray-in bedliner. The bed also features an optional 120-volt power outlet for added convenience.
The SL grade provides a more luxurious option with leather-appointed seating, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, LED exterior lighting, and a Fender premium audio system with ten speakers.
Nissan has incorporated several functional improvements based on customer input. A telescopic-adjusting steering wheel is now standard across all models, while the Pro-X, Pro-4X, and SL grades feature a four-way power passenger seat. The SV grades and above also include a six-way power driver’s seat with two-way power lumbar support.
The 2025 Frontier’s tech enhancements include a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system on SV grades and higher, offering wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. This system allows for seamless smartphone mirroring without the need for USB cords. Standard features across all models now include a sliding rear window and an overhead console sunglasses holder. The SV models come with 17-inch alloy wheels, while the SL grades offer additional amenities like a wireless phone charger, an Intelligent Around View Monitor, and a four-way power passenger seat.
Pricing for the 2025 Nissan Frontier will be announced closer to its on-sale date. The current 2024 model starts at just over $30,000.
