There are few humans out there willing to endure physical hardship like Scott Englund in Never Ride Alone. But watching this film, I understood him; I understand the desire to attain something everyone else thinks is crazy—a goal that takes up so much space in your brain there is no longer room for reason, so it goes out the door.
When you realize that Never Ride Alone is about Scott’s solo quest to be the first to ride a dirt bike to the top of a mountain in the Peruvian Andes (and not about his guiding service or the other side trips he shows in the film), you wonder if it’s his bike tumbling off the side of a cliff in the trailer.
That in media res beginning is gripping and kept me watching, but the true story comes later in the one-hour-and-eighteen-minute film: the support Scott receives from his wife, who is genuinely excited for his mission; the struggle to get to the top; the need to answer your own questions: why would he do that?
If you’re looking for adventure, great Andean scenery, and are okay with maybe still being left with the question of why? afterward, Never Ride Alone is worth the view.
