Anyone who has had the great pleasure of exploring Patagonia and the terminus of the Andes mountain range in southern Chile will know that this is a land of unspeakable beauty and natural abundance, a simultaneously powerful and fragile diverse range of ecosystems. There are two ways to exploit this land’s natural resources – one would be at the edge of various blades for the benefit of a few, and the other would be through the preservation and protection of those resources for the benefit of us all.
Wild Life is a groundbreaking documentary by Oscar winners Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. The film is centered around Kristine “Kris” Tompkins, one of the world’s most influential conservationists, and her work which helped to conserve 15 million precious acres of Patagonia. The documentary captures Kris and her partner, Doug Tompkins’ love story, which is as wild as the landscapes they are trying to protect. In the middle of their lives, the couple fell in love and decided to leave behind their hugely successful outdoor brands, such as The North Face, Patagonia, and Esprit, to focus on creating National Parks in Chile and Argentina. Wild Life documents the couple’s journey as they strive to make the most significant private land donation in history, Doug Tompkins’s death in 2015, and Kris Tompkins’s determination to persevere and create protected national parks in southern Chile and Argentina.
