Founded in 1928, Motorola is one of the oldest mobile technology brands on the planet. Engineers at Motorola invented the car stereo, the walkie-talkie, the first hand-held portable phone, and the world’s first commercial cellular device. Their 3G cell phones dominated the market for years and were instantly recognizable—raise your hand if you had an OG Razr flip phone. By the time the mid-2000s rolled around, the company had fallen on hard times, and it has now passed through several different rounds of ownership and rebranding since.
Even though Motorola isn’t quite the household name it used to be from a consumer standpoint, they are still building cutting-edge and innovative technology across a wide spectrum of categories. A new range of products that should be on the adventure traveler’s radar is their new Defy smartphone and satellite communications link.
The Motorola Defy 2 is a rugged smartphone, and the Motorola Defy satellite link is a Bluetooth device that provides satellite connectivity to any smartphone through the Motorola app. They are designed for traveling or participating in outdoor activities off the grid where cell service may be spotty or non-existent. Motorola claims the devices are waterproof and shockproof, and the phone features a 6.5-inch screen and a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 main sensor. These two new devices incorporate Motorola’s unique satellite-to-mobile messaging service.
Manufacturers like Apple and Samsung are slowly integrating satellite connectivity directly into our smartphones, and the days of needing a stand-alone satellite link like the Defy for your mobile may soon be numbered. However, in the interim, the Defy could be an excellent solution for the communication-hungry explorer. Motorola is launching the Defy range in Q2 of 2023, and you can register for pre-order details here.
