At 58, Muriel (Magee) Farrington was dating a man who said she’d be a natural at riding a motorcycle. A male friend at the time said the same, so Muriel decided to pick up the sport.
Although she committed to two wheels later in life, Muriel once rode her uncle’s Cushman motor scooter in her family’s fields in South Windsor, which may have sparked her interest, at age 10.
Now, 70 years later, she has two BMW motorcycles, one weighing 450 pounds. And she sometimes rides five days a week—that’s far more than I ride at almost half her age.
Her kids have said, “Mom, we were raised to worry about you.”
During her working life, Muriel would watch riders out the window and say to herself, “When I retire, I’m going to do that.”
And she did.
Below is a lovely YouTube sentiment to this remarkable lady below, who was awarded a certificate from BMW for riding over 300,000 miles and many other recognitions. Will she push for 500,00 miles? I hope to find out.
Now you know—you’re never too old to do anything.
Happy Women’s History Month!
