Mercedes Benz Updates GLS SUV Range

A Mercedes Benz GLS may not be our first choice for overland travel. Still, the entry model would be on the high roller’s list, given the brand’s reputation for reliability, build quality, comfort, and innovation. And, while you will be hard-pressed to spot a GLS out on the trail, the vehicle is equipped with all-wheel drive and all the essentials for a moderately challenging off-road experience coupled with ample space for gear, particularly in the GLS 580.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a series of updates to its GLS SUV model range (including the high-end luxury Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 and Mercedes-AMG GLS 63, billionaire transporters). The 2024 GLS models offer enhanced design, technology, and equipment, taking the comfort, connectivity, and performance of the full-size SUV model to new levels.

The GLS SUV models offer space for up to seven occupants and are set to arrive in US dealerships later in 2023. The Off-Road Engineering Package, available for the GLS 580 4Matic, includes an underride guard and, in combination with the SUV’s standard Airmatic suspension, provides 1.2 inches more ground clearance. All-wheel drive and a gear ratio designed for pulling power allow a towing capacity of up to 7,716 pounds and a tongue weight of up to 309 pounds. The GLS also features Trailer Maneuvering Assist and an updated Trailer menu in the central display.

The latest MBUX infotainment system features a new look for the displays, with the central display now a touchscreen. The driver display can be customized with three different styles and modes, allowing for a personalized driving experience. The MBUX Off-Road mode turns unique content such as gradient, lateral inclination, compass, and steering angle into a visual experience, providing a virtual view under the front of the vehicle for the driver to recognize obstacles in their path.

The GLS 580 seems a practical vehicle within a range that appeals to the 1%. For those who simply cannot travel without extraordinary luxury, the AMG and Maybach may tickle their fancy.

The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 offers high performance with a 4.0-liter V8 bi-turbo engine, producing 612 horsepower and 626 lb-ft of torque. The AMG Speedshift TCT 9-speed transmission and AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system provide exceptional driving dynamics. In contrast, the AMG Dynamic Select system offers a range of driving modes for a customized driving experience.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 has further enhanced its luxury features, including a vertical chrome grille with the “Maybach” lettering and Maybach pattern on the air inlet grilles. The model now comes with ambient lighting with animated projection of the Mercedes-Maybach pattern, and the new seat upholstery features diamond quilting with specific perforations, highlighting the luxurious character of the Mercedes-Maybach. MANUFAKTUR Crystal White/Silver Grey Pearl and MANUFAKTUR Mahogany Brown/Macchiato Beige Nappa leather are among the color choices offered for the interior. It’s all a bit much.

Overall, the new GLS model range from Mercedes-Benz brings together a host of updates and enhancements, delivering exceptional comfort, connectivity, and performance coupled with the latest technology, refined design, and luxury features. The 2024 GLS models are set to impress and continue the legacy of the Mercedes-Benz brand, but we still prefer a G-Wagen.
