Kawasaki Announces 2027 KLE650 ABS, Starting at $8,799

Recently, we reported on Kawasaki’s 2027 KLR650 ABS, a motorcycle with a long history of global adventure travel and a dedicated following. Now Kawasaki has announced the 2027 KLE650 ABS and KLE650 SE ABS, introducing a 649 cc parallel-twin adventure motorcycle with standard electronic cruise control, traction control, and selectable ABS. Compared with the enduring KLR650, the KLE represents a substantial step toward modern adventure touring.

The KLE’s strongest appeal is its promise of affordable long-distance versatility, with cruise control a welcome feature for extended highway travel. The SE adds tubeless spoke wheels, a quickshifter, a taller windscreen, and additional protection. Competitive pricing could make the KLE an alternative to Yamaha’s Ténéré 700, Aprilia’s Tuareg 660, and Honda’s XL750 Transalp.

The KLE650 builds on the adventure-focused foundation of the KLE500 while placing greater emphasis on highway comfort and long-distance travel. Its 21-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension accommodate unpaved routes, while a stepped seat, adjustable windscreen, and road-oriented tires reflect its broader touring role. For overland travelers, that combination could suit journeys linking extended pavement sections with gravel roads and less-developed routes.

Power comes from a liquid-cooled, DOHC, eight-valve parallel twin developed from Kawasaki’s existing middleweight engine platform. Electronic throttle valves and revised intake and exhaust systems are intended to provide predictable response at low engine speeds alongside highway performance. Kawasaki says the engine has been tuned for strong torque below 4,000 rpm, with a broad delivery through the middle and upper rev range. Kawasaki has not provided horsepower or peak torque figures in the announcement.

An assist-and-slipper clutch reduces clutch-lever effort and helps limit rear-wheel hop during abrupt downshifts. Electronic cruise control is standard on both versions, a useful inclusion for riders covering substantial highway distances. Kawasaki’s traction-control system offers two intervention settings, with the second providing greater intervention when excessive rear-wheel spin is detected.

The chassis uses a high-tensile steel trellis frame with the engine serving as a stressed member. Kawasaki describes its geometry as placing greater emphasis on paved-road composure than the KLE500. Fuel capacity is 4.2 gallons, although the company has not supplied a fuel-consumption figure or estimated riding range.

A 43 mm inverted cartridge fork provides 8.3 inches of front-wheel travel. Kawasaki’s rear Uni-Trak suspension delivers 7.7 inches of travel and includes stepless spring-preload adjustment to accommodate changes in load. Seat height is 34.2 inches. A slim tank and smooth side panels are intended to allow movement between seated and standing riding positions, while removable rubber footpeg inserts expose serrated surfaces for additional boot grip.

Braking equipment consists of dual 300 mm front discs and a 230 mm rear disc. Riders can disable ABS for unpaved riding, but the system automatically reactivates at both wheels when the motorcycle is restarted.

Both models use 21-inch front and 17-inch rear spoke wheels fitted with Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour tires. Kawasaki describes the tires as emphasizing paved-road grip, a relevant consideration for travelers planning more demanding off-road riding. The SE adds tubeless spoke wheels, allowing suitable tread punctures to be repaired without removing a wheel to access an inner tube.

The standard KLE650 ABS receives a 5-inch LCD instrument panel, smartphone connectivity, and a windscreen adjustable through three positions. A plastic skid plate is standard, while luggage and its mounting equipment are accessories.

In addition to tubeless spoke wheels, the SE’s $1,200 premium brings a 5-inch color TFT display, clutchless upshifts and downshifts through Kawasaki Quick Shifter, a USB-C outlet, metal-reinforced hand guards, and an aluminum handlebar. It also receives a larger aluminum skid plate and a windscreen 106 mm taller than the standard version. Compatible navigation and voice-command functions require a separately purchased license, with availability varying by market.

Kawasaki lists optional panniers, a top case, heated grips, a center stand, engine protection, and alternative seats. The standard model will be offered in Pearl Blizzard White, with the SE available in Pearl Storm Grey or Metallic Bluish Green.

Scheduled to arrive in February 2027, the standard model carries a U.S. MSRP of $8,799, while the SE starts at $9,999.
