Jeep Recon EV Production Delayed to Mid-2026

Originally slated to arrive in late 2024, the production of Jeep’s ambitious fully EV 4×4 has been pushed back yet again, this time until ‘mid-2026,’ as Stellantis reassesses production timing and market conditions. With other OEMs scrapping their EV platforms, this delay is a major moment for one of the most important launches in the modern history of the Jeep brand.

The Jeep Recon

There is no doubt that the Recon represents the bridge between the traditional Wrangler era and Jeep’s inevitable fully electric future. First revealed in 2022, the Recon was designed to bring genuine trail capability into the EV world while still delivering the open-air freedom that defines the Wrangler experience. To be clear, it is not—and was never intended to be—a Wrangler replacement, but more like a little brother or cousin. Unlike many electric SUVs that simply wear rugged styling, the Recon was engineered to tackle real off-pavement terrain. Jeep promised removable doors, aggressive all-terrain tires, locking differentials, skid plates, tow hooks, and trail-rated capability—everything we’ve come to expect from the seven slots.

Underneath, the Recon rides on a Stellantis STLA large platform and is expected to produce around 650 horsepower from a dual motor setup. Early estimates suggest a driving range of 230 to 250 miles, depending on trim and tire packages. Pricing is expected to begin around $65,000 USD, putting it directly against premium electric SUVs while also undercutting some luxury off-road EV rivals.

The Recon is especially significant as it is widely viewed as the test case for a future fully electric Wrangler. Jeep executives have repeatedly stated a true EV Wrangler will arrive later in the decade, likely around 2028 or 2029, once battery density, charging infrastructure, and customer acceptance improve. Of course, that remains to be seen, and I’ll believe it when I can actually order one. In the meantime, the Recon allows Jeep more time to understand how traditional off-road buyers respond to electrification before making the leap with its most iconic model.

The Slowing Trend

Over the last year, several manufacturers have softened or delayed aggressive EV plans amid a marked cooling in consumer demand. Major brands that once promised rapid transitions are now backing off on full EV platforms, emphasizing hybrids and extended-range models. Jeep, however, continues pushing forward with battery-electric off-roaders despite market uncertainty and the reliability and warranty issues that continue to plague the 4xe Wrangler.

On paper, electric powertrains are extremely well-suited to technical off-highway driving. Instant torque delivery, precise wheel control, quiet operation, and low-speed modulation all work brilliantly on the trail. If Jeep delivers on its promises, the Recon is very likely to be the most capable electric 4WD ever. For now, at least.

Mystery and Intrigue

All major vehicle launches need a bit of drama, and this one is no different. To add intrigue to the Recon launch story, industry sales data show that 56 Jeep Recons were sold last year, even though the vehicle was not officially available for purchase. This sparked speculation, ranging from internal fleet registrations to preproduction units or reporting anomalies. Nobody outside Stellantis seems entirely sure where those vehicles went or whether they even reached real customers. So far, this mystery remains unsolved.

Whatever the reason for delays and strange sales reporting, all our fingers remain crossed that the Recon will see the light of day, sooner rather than later.
